The Lea Francis “P” type 12/ 40 cars were produced between 1927 and 1933. Powered by the well regarded Meadows 4ED engine, these models were one of the finest small sporting cars of the late Vintage era. Although quite rare, several have survived thanks to the quality of the original engineering and the efforts of the LFOC, or Lea Francis Owners Club. The majority of cars were bodied by Avon or Cross and Ellis which were similar in appearance.
This car is a 1928 12/ 40 “P” type with two-seater and dickey Avon Coachworks body. HW3681 was despatched to Avon in September 1928 and registered in October of that year. Unusually, it is fitted with the Lea Francis patent free-wheel, a factory option. Little is known of its early history but it was registered in Bristol in 1946 and the buff log book shows owners in the West Country and Surrey in the 60’s and 70’s. It has come to us from 30 year ownership; the last owner bought it in 1992.
In the early 1970’s it was restored to concours standards and won the “Andrews Trophy” at the Stanford Hall LFOC rally. Subsequently, in the early 90’s, it was treated to a professional re-paint and since then it has been used sparingly but well maintained. Last year after a period of little use it was treated to a light mechanical re-commissioning by “Classic Car Solutions” of Luton at a cost of £1440 and we have carried out some further work, various cosmetic improvements and a few test miles. It’s now on the button and running and driving beautifully with willing power.
The “P” type was a deservedly popular model - robust, well engineered and quite advanced with an OHV engine, four-speed gearbox and brakes that would put other pre-war cars to shame. This one possesses a good level of originality, and presents in fine order.
