A very special opportunity to own a truly outstanding piece of World War Two history.
Fairmont Sports and Classics are pleased to offer a superb, collector’s quality 1942 Ford GPW. ‘518YUP’ underwent a 3-year nut and bolt restoration and was carried out entirely by the successful British rallying team, Graham Hathaway Racing.
With a chassis number of 22376 engraved on the inside chassis rails, it leads us to believe it was built in May 1942 and means it was in one of the first waves of the Ford built Jeeps that were supplied in WWII.
A few GPWs and Willys Jeeps have recently come on the market, many of which are scruffy, substandard or the less valuable post-war examples. This is exceptional in its presentation, and everything points towards a restoration that was carried out to a very high standard. Most importantly, it is clear it was restored by someone who not only knew what they were doing but also had a real passion for the history of the vehicle. No expense was spared, and originality was paramount.
Known for their British rallying expertise, Graham Hathaway himself rebuilt the engine, refurbishing many parts and replacing others including new pistons and rods. The gearbox was also rebuilt with new bearings and ancillaries, a new clutch and transfer box. Both the front and rear axle were restored, in addition to new brakes and master cylinder fitted and all new wiring looms and brake pipes reconfigured. With the final touch being 4 brand new tyres fitted.
