The 996SPS was produced between 1998 and 2001. In total there were 1, 780 produced in three versions. The first version in 1998 identified by its gold frame and gold Brembo three spoke wheels. The forks were Showa upside down and the engine as used in the 916sps at 996cc. In 1999 it remained mostly unchanged however a new alternator forced the way for a new crankshaft with late 1999 examples built using different cylinder heads manufactured for WSBK homologation requirements, the chassis remained unchanged. For 2000, the final year of production, a final version known to collectors as the SPS3 was produced, in this range the engine received minor modification however the Chassis received major attention making the 2000 series SPS the finest version of its genre
With usual SPS high spec components these examples now came with a new lightweight aluminium rear sub frame and new 43mm Ohlins forks taken from the World Superbike Racing programme. The frame and wheel colour was now grey. These examples are highly sort by collectors with Ohlins Gold tin coated fork legs and gold stanchions, it clearly epitomised Ducati’s reputation as the worlds most glamorous sport bike manufacturer, the 2000 SPS was the final Ducati Superbike using the desmo engine that started it all with the 851.
