Here we have a stunning example of the rare and iconic tvr 390 se number 64 of just 103 ever built. Produced in conjunction with the legendary andy rouse, the tvr 390se was limited to just 103 examples throughout its production run between 1983 and 1989, making it one or the rarer tvr ‘wedges’ available for enthusiasts.
based largely on the visually similar 350i, tvr commissioned rouse to work his magic on the venerable rover v8 engine to transform its performance. The result was a block that was bored out to 3905cc (4. 0-litres of displacement) and boasted a higher compression ratio, lightweight cosworth pistons, high-lift cams, a lighter flywheel and a free-flowing exhaust unit, with peak figures sitting at 275bhp and 270 lb-ft of torque.
naturally, to cope with this boost in power, other modifications were made by tvr. These included a limited-slip differential to help put the power to the road, a stronger clutch and wider rear tyres to help keep things under control.
visually, the 390 also received a deeper front ‘lip’ and air dam, along with an underbody aerofoil at the rear to aid with downforce.
later production vehicles - such as this example, being number 64 according to its engine - also benefitted from revised ‘a-frame’ rear suspension, providing improved handling, and making these late vehicles all the more desirable.
just 5 previous owners from new, a low warranted mileage of just 57, 000 miles and a superb service record going all the way back to 1988 to confirm its low mileage. As the service history would suggest the tvr is in excellent condition both visually and mechanically. Certainly a well cared for vehicle by all of its previous owners.
we have the original service book containing 6 stamps, the original owners hand book and a large box file full of service invoices, parts replacement bills and general maintenance. The service record is split into smaller files to each of its previous owners, combining each of the files contains 120+ invoices! A staggering level of care this tvr has received throughout its entire life. Far too much to list on here, potential purchasers are welcome to get in touch if you would like more detail regards the history but recent work includes: Compression test (170-190 psi), fuel pressure test (40 psi), ecu repair, spark plugs, stainless manifold, stainless exhaust, manifold gasket set, ally radiator, stainless lower pipe, stainless coolant swan neck, aux drive belts. Also 2x services (2020 & 2022) and the chassis was subject to a scrape, inspection, prepare and paint which revealed no nasty surprises and was in superb shape. Not only does this tvr make a great noise, turn heads and goes fast, but it is reliable as well with all the work carried out over the years for its new purchasers peace of mind.
the paint work is in great order for its years, certainly is an eyeful in the bright red which i think really suits the vehicle. No nasty dents or unsightly scratches to mention, nice and straight down the sides with nothing untoward to report. Not new by any stretch, but i think you'll be pleasantly surprised with this one.
it's the same story for the interior, no rips or tears to the leather upholstery or carpets. The seats do wear some patina but are commensurate with its age. It's a great place to be while driving, full of nostalgia and all the gauges are working as they should. There are some minor 'cracks' to the wood veneer trim but nothing dramatic. Again, she's not new, but in very good order for her years.
