After the best part of 4 years, I've decided to sell my E39 M5. I've loved owning her and without doubt will be missed.
Good service history, including rod bearings and vanos work by CPC in 2013 (>£3k bill) before my ownership, and has had new brake pipes, front control arms, and front brakes since I've had her.
I would say she's in good overall condition, but being over 20 years old, not perfect. I will list all the niggles that I can remember, but in short, still a pleasure to drive! You get a lot of comments by other motorists or passers-by.
There is surface rust apparent, most notably on the front arches and bootlid. I have tried to picture this. The engine light came on a couple of times over the last year, with no noticeable change in performance. However, this has not shown up again recently in the last few months. I got the errors read by a specialist (MSC) which pointed towards a camshaft position sensor, but they advised that it seemed intermittent because it was working fine while I was there. I wanted to be transparent about this because I can't guarantee this wouldn't happen again given that it hasn't been replaced. The rubber seals around the car are looking worse for wear (perishing) and would benefit from being replaced. The rear windscreen sun-blind has come off its runners, I haven't tried to fix this, because I never use it! Likewise, one of the rear parking sensors has gone so beeps constantly while in reverse. Rear brakes and front tyres will need replacing soon. It does drink a bit of oil and the battery drains quicker than other cars I've owned, but having read around on forums it seems nothing out of the ordinary for the E39 M5.
I think that's everything I'm aware of and that I would want to know as a buyer. I'm likely to overly critical but I think it's important to be open about the imperfections, especially when people could be travelling from afar.
I feel that I have priced accordingly, and I can't find anything similar at this price or less via all the usual channels. I might be selling it short.
