In remarkable original condition.
Tax-exempt UK market car. Bought by me in 2006 from its second owner at 51000 miles. After refurbishment of the alternator and radiator in 2006, thorough servicing and brake overhaul in 2007, and a respray in its original and visually striking metallic green in 2008, the car has been extremely reliable, taking me down to southern England a number of times - including to the Mitsubishi Centenary event in 2017 where it won an award. I am only selling to make room for another project.
This is a second generation Celeste, with the wider rear lights, belt-driven camshaft, and the appearance of both Mitsubishi badges and the Colt symbol (a horse’s head) on the car. I think the Colt badges on the rear quarters of this car and the GSR badge on the grille are additions by the first owner, but the wheel centre caps will be original.
The car has been maintained in excellent condition. All invoices have been kept during my ownership, and there are some others from as early as 1994. Most MOTs are present going back to 1998 (when the mileage was 48226). The car neither uses nor drips oil, and runs on 98 octane unleaded with no additives. It passed its most recent MOT on 3/ 5/ 22 with no advisories. All controls, switches and gauges work correctly. The cambelt was last changed in April 2018. Recent work has included refurbishment of the front brake calipers. The original radio has been modified to incorporate a 3. 5mm plug for connection to a music player etc. The original jack and toolkit are present, as are the owner’s handbook and service booklet - all of these are in superb condition. A Haynes manual and factory workshop manual are also included in the sale.
There is a small area of rust appearing at the front of the left rear wheelarch where it meets the sill (see photo). This area was welded at the time of the respray, but may need attention again soon. The other part which is showing its age is the driver’s seat. As can be seen from the photo, the vinyl has worn away at one point on the right edge. Nearly every Celeste I have seen has had the same pattern of seat wear - this is one of the better ones!
Celestes have always been rare, and the car never fails to turn heads and attract admiring comments. Mechanical spares have not been as hard to find as might be expected - the car shares mechanical components with the Galant, while the body was based on a Lancer. Mitsubishi were keen to stress the ruggedness of the car in their advertising by pointing out that Lancer 1600s had come 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the 1976 East African Safari Rally.
