Beschreibung
The Peugeot 106 Maxi was created by Jean Todt’s Peugeot Sport to compete in WRC’s notorious F2 Kit Car category of 2. 0lt naturally aspirated fwd cars. It entailed the incorporation of the 2. 0lt 306 Maxi technology into the longer S2 wheelbase of the already successful in Gr A and Gr N 106 rallye. The result was an extreme car in both performance and appearance that would soon challenge the limits of FIA’s F2 regulations. With 238bhp at 9500 rpm from its 1. 6lt transmitted via a highly advanced sequential 6 speed to the front wheels of a wider track and longer wheelbase, the 106 Maxi was an exceptional tarmac racer that could match and occasionally outrun most of its 4wd turbocharged WRC competition. After Gilles Panizzi’s, Francois Delacour’s and Philippe Bugalski’s winnings at Rally Catalunya and Tour de Corse, FIA felt that Kit Cars posed a serious threat to WRC competition and decided to initially limit their performance by air intake reduction and minimum weight increase to later ban their category and replace it by production-oriented S2000 and Junior WRC predecessor S1600. Notably, the newly set parameters excluded the 106 Maxi from the S1600 category for its extreme engine output of 238 bhp over 200bhp limit and advanced sequential transmission. In response, Peugeot Sport refused to modify down its 106 Maxi specifications to fit FIA’s S1600 regulations retaining its advanced engineering in all 40 Maxis ever made.
Chassis 97 N3 was produced in early 1997 to be delivered to the racing division of Peugeot’s official distributor in Greece, Lion Hellas. After competing in both tarmac and gravel events, it was acquired by a private team of marque specialists, collectors and restorers who decided to race and then restore it. The bare metal process entailed a total rebuilt with strictly Kit Car Peugeot Sport supplied parts. This exceptionally rare item of Peugeot Sport rallying history is now offered for the first time in 18 years in a totally original and fully serviced state.
