PIO 507 - a 1971 Ford Mk1 Capri fitted with a 2. 0 Cosworth YB Turbo. It was featured (and selected as front cover car) in RetroFord Magazine (March 2012) and won RetroFord ‘Car of the Year’ the same year. I bought this car just over 2 years ago from a good friend of mine who already had this built to the car it is now. It started off its life as a 1600 XL and has since undergone a full restoration with a list of tasteful modifications and upgrades to Henry Ford’s initial thought process behind the Capri.
‘PIO’ was initially built to be used as a dedicated track car but soon evolved to something that could do it all - A turn-key fast road car suitable for vintage runs and track days. With this in mind, the shell was reinforced using 3. 0L strengthening plates and tied together with a professionally fitted custom weld in 8-point roll cage. The car is painted in the same Aubergine metallic hue that you would have found on the iconic Escort Cosworth.

The engine, a 2. 0 Cosworth YB Turbo, was fully rebuilt in 2015 with 0. 5mm Overbore Pocketed Pistons, GRPA Head Gasket, ARP Stud Kit, ARP Con Rod Bolt Set, Cosworth High Pressure Oil Pump, G19 Big Wing Baffled & Gated Sump, and Cometic Gasket Set used throughout. Although rebuilt in 2015, the engine has only covered approx. 1000 miles in that time. Full spec of engine & drivetrain components listed below:

The OEM suspension was upgraded to a unique hybrid setup that was improved methodically based on the handling and driveability of the car on both the track and road. The front struts were replaced with GAZ Gold Coilovers with 225lbs 12” springs and roller bearing eccentric top mounts; the rear, upgraded to GAZ adjustable units with a 1” drop and rear axle location kit. The addition of an electric power steering setup, custom tension strut kit and a BMW Z3 steering rack really makes this a fun car to drive on the track and road. It has what can only be described as ‘forklift lock’ making it very forgiving for those ‘steer from the rear’ sideways moments!

The interior of the car is as you would expect for a fast road car of this calibre. A stripped-out interior with a pair of near-new Corbeau Clubsport trackday approved bucket seats with Sparco 6 point harnesses. The dash and door cards have been flocked black and a centre console added to cater for additional toggle switches, fuse holders and a FIA kill switch. Racetech gauges for Boost, Oil Pressure and Water Temperature are housed where the original radio was once. The original heater is still in place and operating faultlessly.

Stopping power up front consists of a pair of HiSpec billet 4 pot calipers matched with 260mm vented discs. The original servo was swapped out for the Mk3 Capri 2. 0 servo so a larger bore master cylinder from a Landrover Defender could be fitted. Sierra Cosworth 4x4 calipers look after the rear via in an inline bias valve. The obligatory hydraulic handbrake is also fitted for the odd bit of flick here and there!

The shell has been repaired in the past and looks to have all been done to a very good standard. The panel gaps are good and the paintwork is perfectly presentable. Remember, the car is 51 years old and it has been built to be driven and for fun – if you are looking for a show winning car, look elsewhere. It is fully road legal and NCT exempt.
