I’m looking to sell my 2002 BMW E39 540i Sport (Japanese import) in titan silver.
As much as I love the E39 platform; I’m missing the luxury of my previous F01 and the capabilities of my previous E39 touring (also a Japanese import)! So, I’ll be looking to move back to an F01 or possible an F11 Touring
Necessary details:
• Mileage: just over 57k miles, it’ll go up but not by a lot as it hardly moves during the week as I work from home
• MOT: full clean MOT until 11th August 2023
• x2 keys (one original and one freshly cut and fully programmed to the car)
• LOTS of paperwork/ receipts and all the invoices of parts bought via Autodoc/ eBay etc + the MOTs and V5
Imported via GMS Cars in 2019; it sat around not moving/ untouched by the first owner through lockdown, and it ticked the boxes when I was looking for earlier this year, as I wanted a project to take on. I’d said when I sold my previous E39 touring that I’d only consider another E39 if it were a V8 & a Japanese import…!
As per my norm (and my very high levels of OCD) the 540i Sport has been massively maintained thorough preventative maintenance and I’ve nigh on rebuilt the car (suspension, cooling system & brakes) as well as freshly refurbished Style 66 alloys (in OEM BMW silver) and new Goodyear Vector 4Season Gen3 all-season tyres (235/ 45/ 17 XL all round). They’re fitted onto 15mm hubcentric spacers with an 82mm stud conversion also. This has the wheels sitting much better and they’re not too tucked away under the arches
A small amount of necessary body work has been carried out also; all 4 door handles were resprayed (lacquer peel) and rear parking sensors fitted – nothing else. There is NO rust to the car whatsoever; this is very typical of Japanese imports.
I’ve also had a ‘back box’ delete done to release some of the V8 sound & burble; it is not OTT, it’s very subtle and quiet when cruising (no drone) etc. I still have the OEM back box that will come with the car & any decent welder at a garage could soon have it refitted if required
• It’s had a FULL cooling system overhaul (stat, water pump, hoses, coolant, sensors etc) bar the rad as that’s a Behr one and dated 2017. Alongside this it had all the top-end rocker gaskets/ spark plug gaskets etc replaced as well as a full 5W30 oil & Mann filter change. All the belts have been changed also
• I’ve replaced the full braking system (discs, pads, lines, fluid) with ATE Powerdiscs and ATE Ceramic pads, along with TRW brake lines and Motul DOT5. 1 fluid
• I’ve replaced every part of the suspension (all arms, bushes, drop links, track rod ends, subframe bushes etc); I’ve upgraded the rear ARB to the thicker E39 M5 one with new Powerflex bushes as well as new Powerflex bushes for the front ARB. All suspension parts are either Lemforder, TRW, Febi etc.
• I’ve replaced all 4 corners also (brand new Sachs OEM Sport shocks, Eibach pro-kit springs, Febi top mounts & bearings and I’m reusing the ‘as new’ spring pads and dust boots/ bump stops from a low mileage E39 M5, which was moved onto KW coilovers!
• It’s also had the likes of the guibo (AKA propshaft donut) replaced; new HEL small brake lines by the ABS pump done also as well as a plethora of other things inc. a full autobox service & new ZF selector switch fitted at the same time. OEM 16:9 head unit is in place and works fine; Grom Audio BT3 Bluetooth kit fitted which works with the OEM controls etc (hands free/ A2DP music playback)
• Full aircon re-gas via Bowker BMW; that was done when they did the full health check and airbag recall
The FULL project is on Piston. heads where all the work I’ve done can be seen. If you Google ‘I’ve done it again BMW E39 540i Sport’ it’ll bring up the full project
I’m well known in the E39 circles, and everyone knows what lengths I go to, to ensure my cars as good as it can be. The project shows every step of the car and the work I’ve had done to it with NOTHING to hide
Spec:
• Xenon headlights
• Rear parking sensors (Steelmate, recently fitted (Japanese E39s don’t get spec’d with PDC from factory)
• Full black leather, electric/ memory, heated seats in fantastic condition
• Powerfold mirrors (chromatic, heated, dimming)
• 17” Style 66s (17x8 straight set) with brand new Goodyear Vector 4Season Gen 3 tyres (235/ 45 XL size)
• OEM Mtec II Sport exterior & interior
• OEM 16:9 head unit & amplifier still fitted with the Grom Audio BT3 kit fitted for Bluetooth/ hands-free
• And more…
Japanese import ‘quirks’:
• The Japanese import BMW cars don’t have an alarm fitted; never spec’d from factory. But they do still have the factory fitted immobiliser which meets UK insurance requirements.
• The key fob/ central locking is infra-red, and they work, or they don’t. Unfortunately, I’ve tried to get the system to work but it’s having none of it & it’s not very well understood on forums. So, it’s manual key access. Central locking works as it should.
• They also don’t have PDC fitted; but as stated, I’ve had the Steelmate rear PDC retrofitted & that works superbly sounder is in the rear arm rest cubby
Known Issues: Nothing major; there’s a small amount of headliner sag above the driver’s seat. It’s been like that since I bought it and I haven’t done anything to try & fix it in fear of making it worse. The rear parcel shelf had the blind fitted; but this is damaged; so, I replaced it with an OEM standard shelf and the rear blind shelf is in the garage & can travel with the car + the switch pack
My asking price is £12k or very near offer – there’s no desperation to sell & I’ll keep using it/ enjoying it and maintaining it until it sells
My asking price is higher than any UK car because of its condition, mileage, rarity, and its level of maintenance. But it’s also a case of ‘find another like it’ – A fresh import will cost you around this price/ more and then you’d have all the work to do to it also. This is very much worth bearing in mind…
