Back in the day, Nissan produced a Nissan Sunny (aka Pulsar) which was a normal everyday car. However, Nissan wanted to put it into rallying. And because of the Group A homologation rules at the time, it meant 5, 000 road going vehicle had to be built, which is exactly what they did. With that in mind, the Sunny GTI-R was born.
As you can imagine, because the Sunny GTI-R inherited rally pedigree from its Group A cousin like its all-wheel drive layout, it handles extremely well and has a great amount of traction. It was quick back in the day and still is now. Power comes from a 2. 0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that kicks out 227bhp and 210lb-ft. Bolted next to the engine is a five-speed manual gearbox. It is very quickly, at the least to say, and it puts a massive smile on your face even when you’re sat in it, let alone driving it.
This particular Sunny GTI-R, which has less than 22, 500 miles, still drives fantastically. It’s been fully taken care of in the past and is still very good looking. Because this is the road going Group A version, it certainly stands out from the crowd with its rally-like body styling which includes big bonnet vents, side skirts and a large rear spoiler. The engine bay has been treated to a CUSCO strut brace in the past for extra stability. Plus, it’s a three-door body style which makes it look even more like a rally car.
As for the inside, on the middle of the upper dashboard there’s a turbo boost gauge, oil pressure gauge and oil temperature gauge. The seats feel snug and hold you firmly at the corners. In general the interior is clean and has been maintained over the years.
