Ford released the first-generation Ford Econoline on September 21, 1960, for the 1961 model year. Beginning development in 1957, the model line served as a replacement for the Ford F-Series panel delivery (and the smaller Ford Courier sedan delivery). Three models were available, a cargo van, a passenger van (also sold under the Station Bus and Club Wagon names), and a forward-control pickup truck.
Competing directly against the rear-engined Chevrolet Corvair van and Volkswagen Transporter, the Ford Econoline established multiple design precedents adopted by successive American vans, including the Chevrolet Van and Dodge A100. While also a forward-control vehicle, Ford introduced a midengined configuration to improve cargo access by creating a flat load floor and enlarging the rear doors, the engine was placed between the front seats.
Launched in 1961 and described in ads as “The 'Covered Pickup' from Ford”, the standard Econoline was later joined by the Econoline ‘SuperVan’: “The New Giant Economy Size.” It had 23% more load space than the standard Econoline stablemate equating to 1. 5ft more load space length, otherwise the same vehicle with more space, as can be seen from the greater overhang at the rear.
Imported into the UK in 2019, this example has ‘retro’ appeal from its signwritten panels. From the plaquettes on the side of the van, the 'SuperVan' began life as a 1966 (Model Year) California market vehicle, fitted out as a camper in 1965 by ‘E-Z Camper of America’.
Subject to body repairs in 2015, mechanical work was carried out in 2019. Today, this example is fitted with a later 1990 5. 3 litre V8 injection Econoline engine. This interesting and retro American camper is offered with a collection of invoices and an original sales article.
