EXTERIOR
There’s something alluring about racing liveries on road cars, inspired by Graham Hills F1 Car from 1967, the Gold Leaf livery features Solid Red combined with Mars gold and yet applied to the latest Exige it still looks incredible; framing the cars aggressive curves whilst maintaining an inherent sense of nostalgia and exclusivity being the only car produced by the factory.
With the deep saturated Solid Red combined with the Mars Gold accents, contrasted subtly by the carbon weave of the bonnet, roof and rear spoiler. Up front sits a set of large intakes; channelling air through the rear diffuser and spoiler they help the Lotus to produce 220kg of downforce, a huge amount considering the car tips the scales at just over 1000kg.
INTERIOR
Continuing the Gold Leaf theme, black leather and alcantara with Red/ Gold contrast stitching adorn much of the interior, including the ultra lightweight carbon bucket seats which sit deep below the huge sills. The luxurious upholstery is offset by lashings of carbon fibre and machined metal throughout the space, including the intricate engineering of the exposed gear linkage, a work of art in itself.
Despite the lightweight focus of the Exige, this example comes specified with optional Air Conditioning, Radio and Bluetooth to prevent the interior feeling too sparse. Having covered minimal miles the cabin sits in near showroom condition, free from any discernible signs of wear.
Removable carbon roof panels can change the experience should the weather allow with further flexibility provided by the full soft top kit, an optional extra at over £1k.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Developed in partnership with Toyota, the Exige’s supercharged 3. 5L V6 produces 430bhp; mightily impressive considering its lightness. With a power to weight ratio of over 400bhp per tonne it manages 0-60 in just 3. 2 seconds and flies onto a top speed of 174mph. Paired to a full titanium sports exhaust and a 6-speed manual gearbox it makes the featherweight Exige an enthralling driving experience, engaging on B-roads and race tracks alike.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Finished in gold as part of the exclusive Type 49 pack, the staggered 17?/ 18? ultra lightweight forged aluminium wheels look sensational and present in immaculate condition. A premium set of matching Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres sit with reasonable tread at each corner.
Nitron 3-Way Adjustable Dampers and AP Racing brakes complete the high performance set up; providing a level and responsive handling with plenty of stopping power on demand.
HISTORY FILE
First unveiled at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed, this one-off Exige Type 49 Special was produced to celebrate Lotus’ 70th birthday and commemorate 50 years since Graham Hill won both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championship in the iconic Lotus Type 49.
Based on a top spec Lotus Exige Cup 430 the car was finished in the Graham hill’s Gold Leaf racing livery of Solid Red with gold accents, as well as gold painted ultra lightweight wheels, tonal handmade black/ red/ gold interior and a special gold commemorative plaque on the passenger side sill.
Alongside a Type 79 Special, the car took on the famous hill climb before being registered in March 2019 and sold as the most unique/ highly specified Exige Cup 430 on the road. The car was delivered to its current keeper in August 2018 who enjoyed the car sparingly, covering just 7, 000 miles under his ownership.
