The Appeal
There are other 70s open top grand tourers, particularly a certain one from Germany, but none of them has the character, soul and soundtrack of Triumph’s pretty Stag. Find a sorted one, and you arguably have one of the best British classics you can.
This smart 1972 Pimento red is definitely a good one, thanks largely to its previous and current long-term keepers. Before the vendor acquired the car in 2014, its engineer owner carried out a comprehensive restoration, including a colour change and an upgrade to Mk2 aesthetics. Since buying it, the current keeper has continued to invest in servicing and maintenance work, entrusting the car to Triumph-trained Club members throughout.
The result is a fine example that runs and drives well. The restoration shows some light signs of age, but it continues to present well. It retains its factory V8, now with a Kenlowe fan, and drives via a Triumph 4-speed overdrive manual gearbox. There are some nice, tasteful touches to improve the experience, such as the walnut dashboard veneers, a wind break and a pair of removable tonneau covers in addition to the folding fabric roof.
This is a well-documented, carefully maintained Stag ready for its next custodian.
The vendor says:
2This is a lovely drivable car that we enjoy so much, and I have taken it all around the country with the hood down over the years; it is admired by other Stag owners, car club members as well as the general public. Only age and health reasons have limited my use of it in recent times.”
Key Information
- Mileage: 104,154 miles indicated (odometer has gone around the clock and currently displays 4,154 miles)
- Country of registration: United Kingdom
- Technical inspection status: MOT exempt
- Technical specs: 2,997cc V8, five-speed manual
- Paperwork: Video evidence and bills from the bare-shell rebuild are available
The vendor says:
“I purchased the car 12 years ago from an engineer who had stripped it down to its shell and completely rebuilt it. I have video of this and all bills that relate to spending massive amounts of money on this refurbishment work. I personally have friends in the Stag Owners Club who did an apprenticeship and worked on Stags and other vehicles until retirement; they are also fellow Stag owners and carry out all maintenance and repairs on my behalf, so I know they have the knowledge required to keep this in fine running order and the work is always carried out to a high standard.”
