EXTERIOR
Presenting in a rare Oxford Blue (4810) this stunning Targa has always been meticulously looked after and has been subject to constant care and attention throughout it’s life. Having enjoyed long term ownership for 30 years in the US, the air cooled enthusiast driver / owner would entrust local bodywork specialist – Panelwerks of Mentor, Ohio – to ensure the car would always look it’s best. The decision was also taken to install factory steel RS flares to improve both aesthetics and performance; the car just looks absolutely spot on with those 8 inch Fuchs at the rear.
More recently Autofarm UK have been through the car with a fine tooth comb and performed a full bodywork detail prior to our in-house team finessing the car even further. The results are just fantastic!
INTERIOR
The Tobacco leather interior space is peak 70’s style and a perfect compliment to the blue bodywork, with the tan corduroy inserts further enhancing the retro feel. The entire cabin was renewed in 2015 with $15k spent at Autobahn Interiors of San Diego with seats, dash, door panels and carpets all replaced to achieve an as new feel to this time warp interior. No stone was left unturned here with both the steering wheel and gauges also renewed.
The removable Targa top is in tip top condition having also been attended to during the restoration process.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Having been enjoyed as a road car for the first ten years of it’s life in the UK, the car would then find a home in the US with major works inclusive of rebuilt engine and transmission alongside routine servicing between 1984 – 2002.
The American enthusiast owner then decided to carry out a full engine and drivetrain refurbishment to 2. 7 RS specification. The subsequent care and cost invested in this build is quite staggering with over $20k spent in achieving a period correct MFI performance Porsche developing a mighty 247hp and 204 lb/ ft. Oil was subsequently sent for analysis in 2003 and 2009 and proven to be clean with minimal wear to the engine. A very thorough engine inspection and top end rebuild was performed in 2013 before the car was used sparingly before arrival into the UK. The most recent engine cylinder compression and leak down test was performed by Autofarm in August of 2021 alongside work carried out to throttle butterflies, fuel system and exhaust.
Gearbox and clutch have also been attended to over the years and work smoothly and intuitively.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The correct RS style 7 & 8 x 15 inch Fuchs wheels present beautifully in a frosted RSR finish; wrapped in Pirelli rubber showing plenty of tread depth on all four corners.
The braking system has been overhauled, inclusive of new hoses, lines and cable guides, offering strong performance on test with calipers, discs and pads also in excellent health.
HISTORY FILE
This Porsche 911 S was one of only 925 examples built for the world in 1973. It was produced on January 5th and originally ordered as a left-hand drive vehicle. to Porsche Cars of Great Britain with optional head rests, rear apron and rear collision bar.
It was legally imported to the U. S. in 1984 by a Dr. Howard B. Johnson of Cincinnati, Ohio with just under 60, 000 miles. Johnson was a long-time Porsche enthusiast and while in the UK for business he saw this Targa at a local dealership. Over the next 30 years Howard invested a lot of time and money creating a fantastic early 911 with an incredible list of enhancements and improvements to suit a sports purpose for both road and track. The car was carefully restored over this period and subject to significant mechanical overhauls with renowned specialists – Steinels Autoworks – in 2002 and in 2013 before sale to it’s next air cooled enthusiast.
On arrival back into the UK and after a period in storage this fantastic Targa would be sent to marque specialists – Autofarm UK – in August of 2021 for an open cheque book overhaul to the tune of £10k.
As such this example sits in wonderful cosmetic and mechanical condition with an incredibly detailed history file spanning the last 30 years, alongside a clear US Montana title and both UK & US Certificates of Authenticity.
