Fresh from a 5 year, 1700 hour restoration we have for sale what must surely be one of the most historic production Austin Healey 100s. This very early build car body number 140 was sold new to David Shale of S & W Motors. As a dealer Shale managed to pull strings and get his hands on this early car not long after its debut. He then set about modifying it for racing with many works supplied parts including the coveted, limited production P280 Le Mans modification kit as well as additional parts above and beyond this only available to works cars. DNH 828 is a privateer racer pioneer, being the first Austin Healey racer to compete at Goodwood outside of the works team plus many other period events.
Restored between 2015-2020 with only test miles since its completion DNH remains in impeccable condition. Restoration was of a full body off, bare metal type with every nut and bolt given specialist attention including a full engine rebuild, gearbox rebuild, re-trim, repaint and full mechanical and electrical overhaul. The car has been fully restored to exactly recreate its original 1953/ 54 race specification with its original colour Healey Blue Metallic paint, accurate racing numerals, numberplates in the same position and format, its original Brooklands aero screen as well as an enamel plaque of Shale’s family dealership ‘S&W Motors’ on the dash.
History of DNH is - as you would imagine - incredible. A large photo album is provided with pictures of the cars races in period, programmes are supplied detailing racing results, speeds, positions, numbers and Autosport articles speak about racing prowess. The car can be seen in this album clipping apexes at illustrious circuits and hill climbs such as Goodwood, Silverstone, Snetterton, Prescott, Brunton Hill, Crystal Palace, often with Jaguar C-Types and other competitors correctly placed behind. Further to this correspondence from Austin dealers in October 1954 confirm fitment of an authentic Le Mans kit (P280). Excitingly the kit was offered to David – rumoured to be a friend of Donald Healey – long before it was otherwise available and long before the launch of the limited edition 100M in 1955 on which such performance modifications became very desirable and famous.
Now provided with FIA HTP papers valid until 2033 this Healey is ready for the new owner to drive on the road or to prepare for competition and revisit the cars original events being eligible for Goodwood and the Mille Miglia.
DNH is provided also with its 100M cold airbox and adapter (large ram air filters currently fitted for performance), its original M spec camshaft (now preserved post restoration), fold down windscreen, new blue side screens, hood frame with black hood, new navy blue Everflex hood, wiper arms and blades, 4 x 48 spoke wire wheels, front and rear bumpers with overriders.
