1970 HUMBER SCEPTRE - AUTO, 61K MILES, A BONNY EXAMPLE. For Sale

HERE is another ever so cool car from the cavern of Martin Howey's classic cars.

Today, it is a 1970 Humber Sceptre registered on January 1, 1970 and thus now more than 53-years-old. The Humber Sceptre (arrow shape) was a top of the range mid-sized family car boasting an "executive wooden dash", luxurious interior and the tried and tested Rootes Group 1725cc engine knocking out the best part of 90 bhp! Highly rated in their day and a sort of compact alternative to up-market rivals such as the Rover P6 and the Triumph 2000/ 2500 range. An auto box was a regular feature on the Sceptre as, back in the day, it seemed to go hand in driving glove with the executive type of driver at which the model was targeted.

However, executive or not, this was still the 70s and so Humber - like most other marques - was quick to reveal its colours of the day. This was one of them. I am sure it had a name but right now, and for sake of argument, I shall refer to it as turquoise!

And so is here is my turquoise Humber Sceptre Mark 3 auto. She is a really pretty example with nice paint work and a pleasing interior. You won't be able to find too many out there these days as it's the kind of attractive classic that seems to attract serious owners who, in turn, show little if any desire to own them for a short while and move them on. Hence, most are happily domiciled. Previous owner converted to one large single carb. Original twin carbs and all fitments are in the boot.

Always a favourite of mine and 50 years ago all I could do was gaze in envy. There was no way of me being able to afford one! Anyway, 53 years after it was built, here is a Sceptre for sale. Rarely available as I mention and a great opportunity to home a Humber.

This description is based on my opinion of the vehicle, the paperwork that comes with the car and anything I have been told about it. The vehicle is 53-years-old and this cannot be taken as a definitive statement for obvious reasons. As with most classic cars, there may be faults and quirks whilst, almost inevitably, some degree of tinkering and care will always be called for. Such are the joys of owning an antique vehicle and they must be taken within their own context and not compared to modern day cars. They are sold as old, mainly out-dated machines and come without any comeback whatsoever. They are my terms and conditions.

My classic cars are motoring antiques. This car, for example, is 53-years-old and is unrestored. It's not two, five or even ten-years-old as your own everyday car may be. It has been in service for more than half a century and so will have quirks and faults in there somewhere. For example, a protective coat has been added to the outer sills and rear quarters probably many years ago and some if it is now peeling off towards the rear behind the arches. Beneath it, the paint work looks to be good. However, faults on these old girls are not always apparent when buying and selling classics which is what I do. I do not restore them, nor do I pretend that they are concours cars. The majority of them go out as they came in, and I continue to enjoy finding more - a skill which is becoming increasingly difficult as many of you will be aware. They deserve to be taken on as "family pets" and cared for through thick and then. They don't make them any more and demand now out-strips supply. Please bear all this in mind, and enjoy your classic car. I can also assist with delivery and so please ask for a quote.

I have now been established as a one-man band classic car dealer for 20 years and pride myself on my buying prowess and - due to small margins - my prices which I firmly believe are up there among the very best in the UK classic car marketplace.

Thanks, Martin. the details below
