SUMMARY

This wonderful pre-facelift 230CE was originally supplied and first registered by Langston Mercedes of Portsmouth on 7th August 1992, and was owned by that same supplying dealership for six months, so it’s fair to say it was almost certainly one of their dealer demos, before being sold to it’s first proper owner in February of 1993, who kept it for the obligatory two years. It was then later sold through Waterhouse Mercedes, Chelmsford to its second owner, who again kept it for that obligatory period of two years. It was then subsequently sold through Cruickshanks Mercedes of Bristol, to its long term owner, who in kept it right up to 2019. However, as is usually the way with cars like this, that were so often bought as retirement presents, the owner fell into ill health and sadly passed away some years later, so the car sat unused in his (clearly dry) garage from around 2005 to 2019, when a dealer acquired it and set about the re-commissioning process. He then later sold it to the Gentleman I bought it from, who covered around 2, 200 miles in it during the year and a bit he owned it, before he was tempted by a Porsche 996.

Now, I don’t normally like cars that have been stood for long periods, but it’s kind of negated in this case as the car was initially re-commissioned by the dealer who bought it from the family, then it was effectively “shaken down” by the last owner, and any issues that arose, were properly addressed by Autoclass of Milton Keynes at quite some considerable cost (over £3500 in total) This also included a full overhaul of the Air-conditioning system , which was converted to run on the later R134a refrigerant. As I tell many of my customers, you simply can’t have a super low (genuine) mileage with a vehicle of this age without one or several periods of inactivity. Just to put it in perspective, an average mileage of 10, 000 per year, would equate to a mileage of over 300, 000 on a car of this age!

Service history and provenance are excellent, the service booklet contains 15 stamps, all but one of them are from Mercedes main dealerships, however for the reasons mentioned above, there is a significant gap; between 2004 & 2021; the mileage on the last service at Mercedes of Bristol before its lay up was carried out on 12th May2004 was 49, 179 then the next logged service logged on 22nd March 2021 after re-commissioning was at 49, 895, so in mileage terms it is full, but in a chronological sense it isn’t. I’ll also be carrying out a full service prior to sale.

Having spent the majority of it’s life in milder climate of the South of England, the majority of those in a garage, the condition of the car is fantastic, with absolutely none with” nasties” typically found on the W124. It’s also finished in the somewhat rare (on a C124) 888 Beryl Blue which is actually more of a very attractiveTeal Colour, and shines like the preverbal new pin; it also really accentuates the classy lines of this most elegant of Coupes.

The drive is simply sublime; I’ve had more of these cars than most and this is up there with the very best. It’s ultra quiet, tight yet responsive and the torquey M102 2. 3 lire straight four cylinder engine, is very well suited to the wonderfully compliant chassis dynamics of the C124. The 230CE is a great "all rounder"; it never feels underpowered, and will do anything you ask of it, with the added bonus being it returns respectable fuel economy, given it’s size. I personally think, the 230CE is the smart choice of engine in any W124, and in my experience, suffers far fewer problems than the six cylinder engines, and the later M111 engine found in the facelift cars.

I’ve also maintained for some time that these pre-facelift W124’s are much better built, and as the model range ages, this is becoming ever more clear, and is a fact that is now widely accepted. These earlier cars suffer much less from corrosion, are much better built and are mechanically are more robust too; they don’t suffer with the dreaded throttle body and bio-degradable engine wiring loom problems of the facelifted M111/ M104 engined cars. The M102 engine in this 230CE uses the Bosch KE-Jetronic fuel injection system which is a largely mechanical system, and will even will run perfectly well, with ECU disconnected (try that on a modern car!). The wiring it does have, will also probably last to the next ice age!. Also, they’re much cheaper to put right, in the unlikely event problems do occur.

You’ll also hear it, all the time, but in the case of the C124 it’s true that values are appreciating quite rapidly now, and I’ve seen a marked and strong growth in values of this model over the last 5-6 years, with significant growth in values over the last two to three years.

So, if you’re looking for one of these most elegant and sought after of Coupes, and want probably one of the nicest available, with superb provenance, and all the jobs done, and which has rare working air-conditioning, you won’t go too far wrong with this one. I’ve even considered keeping this one for myself; I always said if I could find a good 230CE with leather and AC, I’d keep it myself.

Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that.
