The Land Cruiser is undoubtedly the most significant model in Toyota’s history. Despite a 70-year long production run of over 10 million copies, the Land Cruiser did establish Toyota’s reputation for reliability from the early days. Drawing heavily from the automotive needs of the military, Toyota engineers designed and unveiled the 'B-series' in 1951. Initially destined strictly for domestic use, it featured a 6-cylinder petrol engine that powered 4-ton trucks, an SB utility truck chassis and a Toypet suspension system. Prior to becoming Japan’s National Police Reserve chief vehicle, its potential was displayed being driven up Mount Atago to Shinto Temple and to Mount Fuji's 6th station. Upon approval from additional government agencies and private contractors, Toyota revised the B-series further in order to apply to the needs of the general public. The ensuing generation dubbed as ‘20’ offered a roomier cabin, a rounder body with integrated headlights, a softer suspension system for on and off road use and a 23% more powerful engine. Five years later it was revised even further into the ‘40’ series that served the public via a plethora of upgrades including a more reliable diesel 6-cylinder engine coded H, a transfer case of high and low settings to supplement the 3 speed gearbox, a choice of 3 final drive ratios and the option of 3 different wheelbases. In 1972 the HJ45 version was released that featured the H diesel 6 cylinder engine and the long wheelbase coded '45', a combination that would soon be regarded as most successful for an impressive loading capacity over an unbreakable drivetrain.
The HJ45 offered was produced only months prior to the end of production in 1980 to serve the Greek government's National Archives Bureau. After 18 years serving the State, it was sold to a Toyota enthusiast who preserved the car’s originality via regular maintenance at Toyota authorized service centers only. In 2010 the car became part of a private collection where its authenticity was certified by FIVA’s branch in Athens. It is now offered in preserved state with its original matching engine & drivetrain, original interior, original manual, an impeccable service records file and a multitude of spare parts.
