WELL, well. Just look at what has emerged today from the cavern of cool cars that is Martin Howey Classics (Est. 25 years).
Let me introduce you - and probably in the case of many, for the very first time - to my 1957 Daimler One-Four. That's right. That is how the official make and model is spelled. A mere 559 of these two-ton Daimlers were built between 1955 and 1957 before it was replaced by the Daimler Majestic.
According to DVLA stats, four years ago there were just three licenced One-O-Fours in the UK!
So named because it was capable of 104 mph thanks to its 3. 5 litre straight-6 Daimler engine running at 137bhp. There was even a "Ladies' model" produced with Max Factor cosmetics in a hidden tray and other such goodies. Just 49 of that model sold! She runs with a standard auto box (change is smoth on the steering column) and she simply purrs. The engine sounds beautiful and she pulls like a train. Well, in fact she pulls like a 3. 5 litre Daimler ought to. Until now, she is believed to have spent practically all her life in Scotland. Her underside is built like a tank and should not pose any problems for anyone. Likewise, the inner and outer sills. She was painted less than two years ago by J. Mullen Specialist Coachworks of Edinburgh. A really straight, ultra-rare, rock solid and oh so different car is what we have here. She is big. Make no mistake of that. But she is a beauty. Probably the one for sale in Europe right now!
Interior-wise, she is a delight. The deep red leather is probably original and an over powering aroma hits you as soon as open a door. The wooden dash is in great nick as are the picnic tables in the rear. If larger, luxury 1950s care are your thing, then you have come to the right shop. She shows goof MoT history with the last one expiring just a year ago.
This description is based on my opinion of the vehicle, the paperwork that comes with the car and anything I have been told about it. The vehicle is 66-years-old and this cannot be taken as a definitive statement for obvious reasons. As with most classic cars, there may be faults and quirks whilst, almost inevitably, some degree of tinkering and care will always be called for. Such are the joys of owning an antique vehicle and they must be taken within their own context and not compared to modern day cars. They are sold as old, mainly out-dated machines and come without any comeback whatsoever. They are my terms and conditions.
My classic cars are motoring antiques. This car, for example, is 66-years-old. It's not two, five or even ten-years-old as your own everyday car may be. It has been in service for more than half a century and so will have quirks and faults in there somewhere. However, faults on these old girls are not always apparent when buying and selling classics which is what I do. I do not restore them, nor do I pretend that they are concours cars. The majority of them go out as they came in, and I continue to enjoy finding more - a skill which is becoming increasingly difficult as many of you will be aware. They deserve to be taken on as "family pets" and cared for through thick and then. They don't make them any more and demand now out-strips supply.
