UNTIL finding its way to me at Martin Howey Classics (Est. 25 years) earlier this month, this 1973 GT6 Mark III had spent its life with one owner until 2006 and then with just one family until now. Just two owners from new in other words. Highly unusual for this kind of true Brit sports car.
I would imagine that anyone reading this advert will be well aware of where these fun little 2 litre straight-six coupes are in today's classic marketplace. This one, fresh from storage, has to be the best bargain going at £5995.
I will tell you what I can from the car's history file. In April 2007, shortly after arriving with its new family (and 2nd owners), the old girl was totally restored. As I write this I am looking at a bill from Totally Triumph of Northwich, Cheshire from April of that year and the total is £8121. Now that's a fair chunk of cash to throw into a car resto when you factor in that it is now more than 16 years ago!
Her underside remains in very good order. I see no welding needed. Her interior floor pans still look like they were put in very recently and are in the body colour of Magenta. The history file states that the engine was rebuilt just before she was taken off the road and restored.
Now it looks to me that, apart from a brief trip out in 2013 to have her brakes freed off, she has spent all these years port-restoration in storage. That means that we have some exterior issues. The two worst areas appear to be to the rear. One around the GT6 badge and the other to the left hand side near the wing. They are simply fixes however. Then there is some white "stuff" on top of the purple here and there. Paint? I am not really sure. But this is a solid car and so I am talking minor cosmetics here.
Her interior remains in tip top condition with excellent seats and a lovely re-veneered dashboard. The engine spins freely on the key though the clutch pedal is stuck firm and the brake pedal is to the floor. Again, I don't think it is going to be rocket science in this area.
So that's about it. I have to call her a project even though you may well have her up and running in a weekend. So project she is and hence the price. But there is much more good than bad about her. Feel free to come and view. All the same, she is a project. Please accept that fact before purchasing. My description is opinion-based plus I have also used information from the car's history file.
My classic cars are motoring antiques. This car, for example, is 50-years-old. It's not two, five or even ten-years-old as your own everyday car may be. It has been in service for more than half a century and so will have quirks and faults in there somewhere. However, faults on these old girls are not always apparent when buying and selling classics which is what I do. I do not restore them, nor do I pretend that they are concours cars. The majority of them go out as they came in, and I continue to enjoy finding more - a skill which is becoming increasingly difficult as many of you will be aware. They deserve to be taken on as "family pets" and cared for through thick and then. They don't make them any more and demand now out-strips supply. This GT6 is being sold as a project and I have given you my opinion of it to the best of my ability. Please bear all this in mind, and enjoy your classic car.
