This is an R80RT, that I purchased some while ago.
It is a UK bike from new, supplied by Doug Hacking motorcycles, Bolton, to its first, and effectively one owner. It was initially registered to the supplying dealer, then to the only registered owner for over 30 years.
Although the recorded mileage was very low @ 37k, the bike had been garage stored for for over 20 years, and was due some tlc. Unbelievably, the bike will be going for its first MOT this coming week.
A good customer of mine spotted the bike as it arrived, and was itching to refresh the bike, so late last year he bought the bike, and set about some spit n polish…………but got rather carried away!
He decided to convert the bike from an out and out tourer, to a more manageable “roadster” spec, removing the large and rather heavy fairing. (they're not too pretty, but that are a fantastic piece of touring kit). The bike was then refreshed from the new tyres upover. The engine / box, etc, we’re removed, and the frame and all associated black parts were sent off for blasting and powder coating. Wheels were stripped and 2k painted, and wrapped in new Conti Go tyres. (still zero miles on them). The engine, although running sweetly, was stripped and re built with new gaskets / seals, etc, and had new stainless pushrod tubes fitted. The rest of the bike had similar attention, including re built carbs, new cables, refreshed electrics, new battery, progressive front suspension and Hagon rear unit, Goodrich brake lines, lots of stainless, (including the complete exhaust system) and of course all new fluids and filters. There’ll be loads I’ve missed, but you get the idea.
I’m pleased to see that the original factory paintwork was left as is. It retains a little light patina (the usual rubbed coach lines) but polishes up really nicely and looks lovely. There are also lots of nice touches, such as the original luggage, crashbars, optional twin disc conversion, and clock pods containing genuine time clock and voltmeter. The rather valuable registration will stay with the bike.
As i say, the bike will be having its first ever MOT next week, and after some light runs out, should be ready to go in about a week or so. If you’d like to see and hear the bike in the flesh, I’m planning to take it to my stand at the Stafford Classic show on 14th and 15th October.
I’ll also be taking the usual selection of good, used, Airhead spares to the show, including tanks, seats, shocks, etc, etc, so if you’re after that elusive spare, drop me a note or give me a shout and I’ll endeavour to take it along with me.
I usually try to carry a broad range of Airheads in stock here at JTR Classic BMW, Washington, NE England, and at the moment, have bikes ranging from running / riding “project” machines to immaculate R90S. Flexible viewing days / times available, but by appointment please. Discounted courier service available. Kettle’s always on.
