Here we have for sale this early 1973 Series 3, presented in the truck cab format, in the Marine Blue colour scheme with Black Modular Wheels. In previous years, the engine has been uprated to the 200TDI unit, complete with turbo and Steve Parker exhaust system, to afford maximum power and torque.
Externally, there is a good mix of period features with modern upgrades to make things more liveable - vintage number plates, grab handles, original galvanised cappings, deluxe bonnet, recent bumper etc - along with wheel arch extenders to allow the fitment of Grabber AT2 tyres on modular wheels for a good compromise between on and off road ability, as well as being larger than standard to give extra gearing... defender mirrors are fitted for better visibility, too. The bodywork is a spray finish, which is nice to see - and, in our opinion - we think this is the perfect marriage between a period and modern look, making it more usable whilst being sympathetic to the original brief.
We are a big fan of these truck cabs, especially when on the inside - the smaller cabin means less cabin noise, it means that the heater can keep things much warmer in the winter, and the fully lockable front cabin means they're more secure too. For those who are planning to carry things throughout the autumn and winter like Xmas Trees, logs, coal, scrap for the tip, the dogs after they've been rolling in the mud, the surf boards for the kids- you'll appreciate having the option of closing the rear sliding windows and not sharing the cabin with them on occasion! The rear is unfitted except for a load mat but the versatility means you can either cover this with a tonneau cover, or with a canvas - you could even fit benches back here for the occasions you plan to carry passengers, which would afford seating for seven people (we can do this for you on purchase, if you wish). Then, the windows can be opened so heat can be shared and a conversation can be had, giving the feeling of a station wagon if so desired. All of our company trucks are Truck Cabs for the reasons above, and this is just a few of them! There are three front deluxe seats, along with deluxe matting to the footwells. Both outer belts are proper 3 point "over the shoulder" belts with a centre lap belt.
Where this Series 3 really shines though, is out on the road - the 200TDI engine with turbo (and with a full Steve Parker Exhaust, which are a custom item of considerable expense) means you can keep up with modern traffic without feeling as though you are the "cork in the bottle"! Cross-Climate tyres that are oversized mean a good compromise between on and off road ability, whilst maximising the firepower that you've got to hand - this Series will not run out of go... you'll run out of gumption first. This means that, for the perspective owner - you've got an MOT & Tax Exempt workhorse which can be used for family outings to the beach with a picnic in the summer, and as the workhorse in the winter.... just about as versatile as these Series vehicles can be. We purchased this vehicle locally and collected it and drove it back to our premises - and it was quite happy sat at the legal limits... the aim being that getting to and holding speed is a much easier experience.
In summary, if you are looking for a Series that can be the best of both words - a vehicle to pose in during the summer, but that can get you and the family through the upcoming British weather, then this could be for you. With MOT & Tax Exemption, along with low-cost insurance policies, it could prove to be a very attractive prospect for the future, whilst still maintaining and appreciating in value.
