By 1959 Honda was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world, producing 500, 000 units a year. To conquer the world market the company decided to first focus on the American market and on June 4, 1959 a modest sales office was opened in Los Angeles. The company tried to develop a market for small, light, easy to handle and to maintain two wheelers. The first years were difficult, in 1959 no more than 1732 Hondas were sold in the USA. Year by year the company managed to improve sales and the smart advertising campaign ?You meet the nicest people on a Honda? gave the company a good image with the public. The image of motorcycles and their riders hadn?t been very positive in the USA at that time, but Honda opened the door for motorcycling freedom for millions of Americans.
The Honda CL125 was a scrambler, made from 1967 to 1974. Two different engines were used through the model?s life. From 1967 to 1969 the CL125A 124cc twin 4-stroke was produced and in 1973 and 1974 the CL125S 122cc single 4-stroke.
The CL125A we present is one of the first series. She has a compression ratio of 9. 4:1 and delivers 13 hp @ 10, 000 rpm. This interesting Honda with characteristic high rise double exhaust is unrestored but virtually complete.
