Here we have for sale a rare Stage 1 V8, having been rebuilt onto a Galvanised Chassis in recent years.
As can be seen from the photos, this vehicle is currently presented in LWB Truck Cab configuration ? ideal for work or play, as the rear load space can be used for transporting bicycles, motorcycles, surfboards or even a double bed! We find that this set up is really useful as it can still transport three people whilst having the capacity to even move house with! Of course, it is possible to convert to a full LWB soft-top if so desired (even with rear side windows) and some bench seats to make it a soft-top family run about.
This rare Stage 1 V8 is nicely presented, and has all the elements one would expect to see from this rare vehicle ? the classic stage one grill and flat front, military lifting eyes and a good set of limestone wheels with road-biased tyres. The rear tailgate has been previously upgraded to allow both opening types ? either ?drop down? or side opening. The paintwork is of a sprayed finish and is well presented throughout, as the photos show. There is a height adjustable rear towbar with electrics so that this vehicle could be a great tow car coupled with the strong, galvanised chassis and powerful engine.
The interior is very standard with three front deluxe seats, all fitted with belts, and deluxe mats to the footwells. The smaller cabin promises a warmer space in the winter months. As this vehicle is a Stage 1 V8, there is a diff lock and hi-low lever tucked away on the seatbox. There is also a superb overdrive (more on that later). To the rear, there is a recent canvas fitted, and a spare tyre stowed in the correct location.
Out on the road is what really sets these Stage 1 V8s apart from a Series of a similar age. The drivetrain set up is very different to the usual Series ? these vehicles are constant 4 wheel drive with diff lock, just as a modern defender is ? the powerful V8 engine is mated to a gearbox with five forward speeds. This effectively means that cruising at the legal maximum speeds permitted is not just possible, but comfortable and practical. This vehicle has got to be right up there with the best driving Series vehicles we?ve ever had the luxury of selling. The steering is light despite the lack of power assistance, the brakes are reassuringly good and the ride quality is reasonably pleasant due to the extended wheelbase. All in all, we have found the driving experience to be quite remarkable bearing in mind the age of the vehicle.
