The BMW E31 8 Series was the pinnacle of the BMW line-up in the 1990s, and is now becoming increasingly appreciated in the classic car market. First shown at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show, the 8 Series was launched to challenge the likes of the Mercedes C126 and its successor, the C140. The design was elegant, yet strikingly different, with its pillarless and frameless windows, and the car offered a host of innovations including an impressive 0. 29 drag coefficient.

Following the deletion of the much loved '6' series, BMW upped its game with the successor '8' series models. Developed by BMW's Motorsport division and intended as flagships for the company's advanced technology, the first of these multi-cylinder sports coupés arrived in 1989 in the form of the 5. 0-litre V12-powered 850Ci. The range was extended to include 5. 4-litre V12 850CSi and 4. 4-litre V8 840Ci models before production ceased in 1999. As one would expect of a top-of-the-range BMW, build quality was exemplary, the passenger compartment being virtually airtight, which necessitated the provision of an ingenious system that automatically dropped the windows slightly to facilitate door opening and closure.

As well as stupendous performance - 0-60mph in around 6 seconds and an electronically limited maximum speed of 155mph - the '8' series offered the latest in suspension technology, featuring computerized monitoring and adjustment of damper settings. That safety had been of equal concern to its designers was reflected in the provision of body crumple zones, a rigid passenger cell, anti-lock brakes and driver/ passenger airbags as standard. Although out of production for more than decade, the '8' series was blessed with classically proportioned, understated and essentially timeless styling that has not dated, and these beautiful and exclusive Gran Turismos still look modern today.

Our car was ordered new by the BMW Dealer, Eastern Motor Company in Edinburgh, and was ordered to be their own demonstrator. As a late 1998 car featuring the later 4. 4 engine they spared no expense and actually ordered a Sport and also an Individual car. They specified the classic Arctic Silver but with an Individual Red Leather Interior piped in Silver with Black Carpets and Dash. In addition to this they specified Cruise Control, Electric Steering Column and Graduated Tint Screen. the Final Price came to £58, 495. The car already came with the Individual Sports Package, Sunroof, Electric Seats, BMW Hifi Speakers, BMW Business RDS Stereo, Air Conditioning etc.

We have nearly every invoice from new showing a nice service history to the current 102k Miles, which is quite low for one of these. Our car has a new MOT until January 2025 and drives exactly as you would expect, it is a very comfortable place to be! We have thoroughly enjoyed using her over the last few days and she is ready to drive away. The late Sport Individual is one of the most desirable of the E31 range, the colours of this are unrepeatable, we could not find another, the mileage is great and the condition is very nice. The price is also great for a model that is on the move, they are getting more and more expensive every year, as they should. Please be quick if you fancy this car for the summer!
