As a specialist in Air cooled BMW’s, I was delighted in 2019 to see BMW announce a very limited run of R Nine T’s to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the launch of the groundbreaking / 5 series in 1969.

This particular example will be of particular interest to investors / collectors, as with only 5 (yes, five) miles from new, it is essentially a new bike.

For those that don’t know the story, here’s some of the pre launch blurb:

With the new BMW R nineT / 5 nothing has changed when you look at the specification, it’s all about the unique styling. The stunning Lupine Blue metallic paint with a smoke effect bears the anniversary emblem, whilst the completely new chassis and engine captivate the fresh, modern design. What’s more, expect exciting throwback features sure to rekindle your memories of the original model including heated grips and chrome rear mirrors. Furthering this connection, the / 5 model will also feature knee pads, an anniversary badge and gaiters on the telescopic fork. The seating has also been revamped with double contoured seat, cross-embossing, grab straps and white piping. Whilst its looks may bring you back to the 60s and 70s the bike is still distinctively modern with standard features including the familiar air and oil-cooled 1, 170 cc opposed-twin boxer engine with a power output of 81kW, 6 speed gearbox standard ABS, ASC (automatic stability control) and spoked tube-type rims.

The bike is a UK model from new, having been supplied by the BMW main dealer Reiten Motorrad, Suffolk, in December of 2019. There’s an interesting story behind it never actually making it into daily use, and I have a covering letter from the owner explaining that. Given the opportunity, I was really pleased to be able to buy the machine, and it’s stood in pride of place in my small showroom. It is started regularly, and run up to temperature, and has even been taken (in my van) for its two MOt’s, both showing the 5 miles from new. Out of interest, I’ve attached a pic of the bike with its “Grandfather”.

Obviously quite a rare opportunity, and for piece of mind, and although it clearly isn’t needing it, I will book the bike into my local BMW main dealer for a pre delivery service. So the bike will be ready for either summer cruising to your local watering hole (its unlikely you’ll see another !) or ready to look stunning in your conservatory.
