Even more exclusive and more powerful than the coupé, the Reventón Roadster - of which just 15 were produced - was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009. With a price well in excess of a million euros, and 670 hp under the bonnet, the Reventón Roadster asserted itself at the time as the most radical Lamborghini ever produced.
No more and no less than one of the most extreme cabriolets on the planet to this day!
Although the Reventón coupé's style was inspired by "the fastest aeroplanes", under its coachwork it was mechanically similar to the Murciélago LP640. Successor to the Diablo and the Lamborghini flagship, the Murciélago hypercar was presented in 2001 for model-year 2002 and, like its predecessors, received the name of a fighting bull. The Murciélago was then Lamborghini's first new model in eleven years, but also the first new release from the Italian marque since its purchase by the Volkswagen Group in 1998. Designed by Luc Donckerwolke, the Murciélago was very low, with its roof standing at under 1. 20 m and of course was furnished with the distinctive scissor doors that swing upwards and forwards when opened. A mix of carbon fibre, steel and aluminium were used for the chassis/ shell, while the suspension used the standard double wishbone technique at all four wheels. Its engine is longitudinal, a 6. 2 litre V12 whose lineage can be traced back to the first Lamborghinis of 1964. As fitted in the Murciélago, this formidable engine produced 572 hp, transmitted to the ground via four-wheel drive. An adjustable rear spoiler and variable air intakes were deployed automatically when necessary and kept the Murciélago stable at its top speed of around 199 mph.
A roadster and a sharpened version, the LP640, followed in quick succession, the latter powered by a 6. 5 litre version of the legendary Lamborghini V12 designed by Giotto Bizzarrini and available with the previously unseen E-gear robotised sequential gearbox. Of note are various limited editions before the last Murciélago - the LP 670-4 Super Veloce (SV) - which made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 2009. As its name suggests, the LP 670 produced 670 hp (661 bhp) and it is this version of the eternal Lamborghini V12 that can be found on the Reventón Roadster. That is 20 hp more than the Reventón Coupé. 0 to 60 mph was announced at 3. 4 seconds and 205 mph as the top speed, around 6 mph more than the coupé. The total weight only exceeds the hard-topped version by 25 kg, weighing in at 1, 690 kg, a real achievement. One of the spectacular characteristics of this model is its overroll system that deploys to protect the occupants in the event that the car rolls.
The all-wheel drive chassis remained unchanged and the roadster was endowed with the Lamborghini six-speed E-Gear transmission. Alloy wheels with Y-shaped spokes and ceramic carbon brakes were fitted as standard. Like on the coupé, the roadster's rear spoiler deployed at around 80 mph, taking on a steeper angle at around 136 mph to achieve greater downforce.
The Lamborghini Reventón Roadster still sports a highly angular style, very much inspired by the world of stealth aircraft. All curves have vanished, giving way to crisp-cut lines that transfigure the original design of the Murciélago. Most of the panels of the coachwork, except the doors, are made of carbon fibre composite (CFC). Stephan Winkelmann, president and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini S. p. A., said: "The Reventón is the most extreme car in the world: a true automotive superlative. Our designers at the Lamborghini Style Centre took the technical base of the Murciélago LP640 and compressed and intensified its DNA, its genetic code".
While designing the Reventón, Manfred Fitzgerald, Lamborghini's director of brand and design, took his team to a European NATO base for inspiration. During their trip, the team members were unanimously seduced by the design of the F-22 Raptor, a single-seater tactical stealth fighter aircraft. Back at the factory in Sant'Agata Bolognese, they got to work...
The paint finish adds to the car's fighter aircraft look. The new shade is described as a mid opaque green/ grey "without the usual shine". The finish is matt, but thanks to the addition of metallic particles to the paint, the car can be surprising in certain lights. Among numerous other remarkable details: the wheel rims. Carbon fibre fins are screwed onto each of the rims' aluminium spokes. True to the philosophy of the marque, the fins are not only stylish, they also act as turbines, ensuring proper cooling of the solid carbon brakes. LEDs are used for the rear lights, with all the artistic freedom that this allows. The total aircraft look continues right down to the design of the fuel tank cap.
Like the coupé, the interior is completely insane: note the presence of an accelerometer to measure the G-force to which the driver is subject around bends. Longitudinal and transverse acceleration are shown on a special 3D screen, another loan from aviation. Evo magazine described it thus: "As usual it's the interior that's arguably the star of the show with the cutting-edge, strike-fighter themes perhaps even more stunningly resolved than the exterior's. Instead of dials, the dash has aircraft-style multi-mode liquid crystal displays – two transreflective, one transmissive – set in a housing milled from solid aluminium billet shrouded in a carbon fibre casing. The driver can choose from three vehicle information settings and, at the press of a button, switch from a digital to an analogical display with classic circular instruments. There's even a G-force meter."
In a specific Grigio Reventón colour with a black interior, this incredibly rare supercar was sold new in Switzerland by Lamborghini Porrentruy and has always been maintained there. It was serviced in February 2011 at 2, 028 km, in August 2012 at 2, 371 km, in August 2013 at 3, 187 km and in January 2018 at 3, 778 km. The current and second owner acquired it in 2018.
With just under 4, 100 km on the clock from new and never having been in an accident, this Reventón Roadster is in very good condition. It is sold with its German registration document and all its original documentation, including its "flight recorder" box and the military bag that goes with it.
