Initially released five months after the Chevrolet Camaro (neatly coinciding with the announcement of the competing Mercury Cougar), the Pontiac Firebird provided a more streamlined look and Pontiac-specific engines. By 1970, the Camaro and Firebired were ready for their second generation. New styling, an increased focus on safety, and additional trim levels and option packages enticed plenty of buyers to both cars.
While the Formula and Trans Am models provided the highest performance, the new Esprit trim level rewarded buyers with additional luxury as standard. As changing safety and fuel economy standards placed increased pressure on sporty cars, engine options and configurations were adjusted accordingly. By 1973, this meant extra steel in the bumper and fenders and a new exhaust gas recirculation system. Even still, production was up over previous years, a trend that continued when the car was restyled in 1974.
