1953 MG YB 1 ¼ litre Saloon
Designed in 1939 and intended for launch the following year, the ‘Y’ Type, or MG Ten as it was originally to be known, did not actually reach production until 1947 as private car production gave way to war work from 1940. With independent front suspension and rack and pinion steering, the Y Type’s handling belied its rather dated appearance. Production ran until 1953, with an update in specification during 1951 when the model became the YB, with improved braking and 15” wheels replacing the earlier 16” items. A hypoid rear axle was also utilised.
This 1953 example is a late model and has benefited from much work over the years. Supplied by University Motors, it still retains their plaque affixed to the dashboard.
A considerable amount of documentation is supplied, which includes an album of photos showing the car undergoing restoration work, along with many old invoices and details of previous ownerships.
There is a current MOT certificate, this being valid until January 2026.
