HISTORY OF THE MERCEDES W123 The Mercedes 123 succeeded the 114/ 115 models in 1976. The 123s were designed with profitability and reliability in mind at the height of the oil crisis. They came in a range of body styles: saloons, estate cars (the first to be designed entirely at Mercedes), coupés and limousines, as well as a wide range of engines, from 4-cylinder 2. 0-litre to 6-cylinder 3. 0-litre, both petrol and diesel, equipped with carburettors or fuel injection systems. These engines gave the 123 a legendary reputation for longevity and reliability, with some models now clocking up several million kilometres. With over 2. 7 million units sold up to 1986, the 123 is now considered a Mercedes bestseller. It was gradually replaced by the Type 124 at the end of the 1980s.
