Description
The XJ400 and Yamaha's XJ series marked a turning point in engine architecture: they were the first engines with an alternator behind the cylinder block, and therefore the first narrow engines, and among the first with double overhead camshafts. In terms of looks, the teardrop tank softens the very square lines of the 1970s, from which it retains the chrome. A very comfortable motorbike, both reasonable and pleasant to ride (45, 000 km covered with it in 7 years). This one has been stopped since 2003, after a tightening due to heatwave. Always stored in a dry place. The idea of rebuilding the engine never came to fruition, due to a lack of time, and then the flight of the two source engines. From memory: connecting rod bearings, possibly a crankshaft, re-boring and segmentation. The top engine has no reason to have been damaged. The gearbox and clutch still work. I don't know about the starter, but there's one running among the extra parts. Apart from the engine, it's in good condition, a bit dusty. The fuel tank is rusty inside, a bit blistered outside, but watertight, so it can be restored "restom" style quite easily a priori. The seat, among other things, is in very good condition.
There are a number of extra parts, as far as can be seen:
- 1 exhaust pipe (left), - 1 starter motor that turns, - the wiring harness and some electrical components, - 1 complete carburettor manifold with 1 set of floats and the needle system, - some air box ends, - 1 fuel filler cap with key, - fork plate and headlight brackets, - 1 set of horns, - 1 kickstand, 1 seat lock (same key as the fuel filler cap),
- 1 set of rectangular indicators, but 1 cover is missing, - 1 set of complete indicators for the windscreen (gone), - 3 plastic side covers with the lock hole (1 grey, 1 red, 1 green) and 1 on the battery side (green), - 1 black aluminium engine cover on the right-hand side, - 1 rear brake control rod, - 1 set of wheels (tyres out of order).
All in the condition it was in 20 years ago... A very nice bike that's a pleasure to ride for someone who has the time to get it up and running again, as I did myself in 1995: I restored it from the frame up. Mechanics, repairs and maintenance are easy. Ideal for starting out with a nice bike. Valid registration document. Only contact me if you're interested in taking it back in a careful way. I checked it out on the internet, with the extra parts, I know it's a good price, so it's a firm price. I wish it, and its buyer, a nice restoration and some nice rides.
