The Tipo 164 was Alfa Romeo’s proposal for a luxury car, the model initially created in collaboration with Fiat, Lancia and Saab – known as the Tipo Quattro (Type Four) project. When presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1987, it was obvious that the Italians ambition was to challenge the German premium brands in the upper mid-range, like the Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5 Series. With extensive use of galvanizing many body parts, result was a highly improved build quality, giving Alfa Romeo success in producing a car where quality and driving capability truly matched the sharp and elegant lines of Pininfarina.
Chief designer Enrico Fumia’s brilliant yet simple lines have over time proved classic with a timeless grace that makes contemporary competitors appear somewhat outdated today. The top qualification however, is the fabulous 3-liter Busso V6 engine, which without comparison was the most charismatic engine of its class. Often proclaimed the world’s best 6-cylinder engine – maybe talking your mouth full, but still – there is no doubt about the engine sound, it’s one of the best roaring you will find!
For the true Alfisti this example must be a real treat. It is an early series 1 with a pre-series interior with the rare combination of leather and suede with transverse stitching. The seats are electrically adjustable. The car was sold new in Germany to its first and only owner, an elderly judge living in southern Germany. He only used it to bring the family back and forth to their holiday home in Spain, which is why it has automatic air conditioning. In 2009, it was deregistered in Germany and sold to a Danish collector, who had it in his collection since then. It has been fully serviced and comes with 2 sets of keys and full documentation on the unusually low mileage of only 57. 900 km.
