Introduced in 1988 as an evolution of the earlier 2. 3-16, the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2. 5-16 was developed in collaboration with Cosworth as part of Mercedes’ ambition to compete in Group A touring car racing. With a larger displacement engine producing around 195hp, improved mid-range torque and revised suspension tuning, the 2. 5-16 offered both sharper performance and greater refinement. The model served as the basis for Mercedes’ successful DTM cars of the late 1980s and early 1990s, cementing its place as a true homologation special.
The car
Finished in gleaming Smoke Silver, this right-hand drive automatic 190E 2. 5-16 was originally purchased in the UK. This example carries notable provenance, having been owned by Mike Hall, chief designer and director at Cosworth throughout the 1960s to the 1980s. During his career, Hall was instrumental in the development of the 2. 3-16 and 2. 5-16 engines for the 190E, making this particular car a highly significant example of the model.
The car presents with low ownership and mileage. The bodywork remains tidy overall, with only a few age-related marks, while the interior continues to present well. It is accompanied by a comprehensive service history, supported by many MOT certificates and invoices for work carried out. This documentary record provides confidence in both the maintenance and long-term care of the car. It has been in the current ownership since 2021.
The factory specification includes an electric sliding sunroof with tilting device, a top-tinted windscreen, headlamp washers, heater and ventilation controls, a heated rear screen, centre console battery voltage and oil temperature gauges, and electric windows.
