Description
Presented in late 1982, the Mercedes-Benz 190 marks an important turning point in the marque’s history. As the first compact saloon, it heralds a new approach blending smaller dimensions, driving dynamics and quality standards particular to Stuttgart. Very quickly, the “baby-Benz” is developed into a sporty version in order to campaign the car in touring car championships.
Thus, in 1984 the famous 190E 2. 3-16 appears, the fruit of collaboration with engine tuner Cosworth. From the four‑cylinder block of the 190E, they develop a 16‑valve cylinder head, allowing the engine to deliver 185 horsepower and, paired with a Getrag manual gearbox with inverted first, to offer a decidedly sportier character to the car. Externally, the car is distinguished by a specific aerodynamic kit comprising a front spoiler, side skirts and a rear wing intended to improve high‑speed stability.
The reputation of the 190E 2. 3-16 is definitively established by two landmark events: three cars running virtually at full throttle for 9 days on the Nardo circuit in Italy, covering 50, 000 km at an average speed of 247. 9 km/ h ... new record set!
The second is during the inauguration of the new Nürburgring layout in 1984, at a race bringing together many Formula 1 pilots. It is the young Ayrton Senna who takes the wheel of a 2. 3 16 identical to those offered to the public, helping to engrave this model permanently in the legend of the 1980s sport sedans.
The example we offer today is a 1985 model, metallic black (199) with a leather/ tweed Houndstooth interior, equipped with the manual gearbox, the most sought‑after configuration. Doorless? No, “sortie de grange” meaning barn find; seven years ago the car was restored: paint, wheels, new tyres; interior, the leather-wrapped steering wheel and upholstery have also been redone to match the original. Note that the dashboard is intact on its upper section, but some trim elements remain bear the marks of time. Faithful to the W201 series’ reputation for solidity, it testifies to a particularly durable design, conceived at the time to cover very long distances without compromising its mechanical qualities. With 223, 000 km, it runs perfectly, with all its power. It should be noted that the steering rack is new.
Today recognised as one of the great sport sedans of its era, the 190E 2. 3-16 occupies a special place in Mercedes history. Elegant, chiselled, high‑performing and rich in competition heritage, it perfectly embodies the spirit of the 1980s youngtimers. Thus it is a characterful car that we are pleased to present, aimed at a enthusiast with a taste for the authenticity and charm of German sportscars of this period.
