There's a received wisdom that Cup Chassis and Trophy models represent the Megane RS at its best. The reality for the latest RS however, is more nuanced. While those versions bring sharper responses and mechanical limited-slip differentials, they also fidget over broken surfaces and demand concentration where the Sport chassis simply flows. On British B-roads – where hot hatches actually live – the Sport specification often proves more rewarding. This example is also paired with the upgraded bi-metal brakes from the Trophy, making it the best of both worlds.
The 1. 8-litre turbocharged four cylinder is shared with the Alpine A110, delivering 280bhp and 390Nm of torque. The 4Control system turns the rear wheels up to 2. 7 degrees in the opposite direction at low speeds, then progressively turns them with the fronts at higher speeds. It gives the 280 a level of agility of a much smaller hot hatch, yet keeps things relaxed on a motorway run.
