Description

1951 Alvis TA21 – Restored/ Meticulously Maintained

The Alvis TA21 occupies a significant place in post-war British motoring history, representing the marque’s first completely new model following the Second World War. Introduced in 1950, the TA21 was bodied by Mulliner and marked a move toward larger, more refined sports saloons. Powered by Alvis’s proven straight-six, seven-bearing engine and equipped with twin SU carburettors, the model was capable of approaching 100 mph, establishing itself as a true gentleman’s express — fast, dignified and impeccably engineered.

This fine example was first registered on the 1st of May 1951 and is presented today in an elegant black and silver colour scheme that perfectly suits the model’s understated character. Remarkably, the car has had only three owners from new, a rarity for a vehicle of this age and a strong testament to the care it has received throughout its life.

Over the years the Alvis has benefited from extensive restoration and meticulous ongoing maintenance. The bodywork was comprehensively refinished in its striking two-tone livery, with all brightwork re-plated to a high standard, allowing the car to retain both its presence and authenticity. Time has since allowed the restoration to mellow gracefully, giving the car exactly the kind of patina so highly prized among seasoned collectors.

Mechanically, the TA21 has been carefully maintained with sympathetic upgrades to enhance reliability while preserving originality. The cylinder head has previously been rebuilt and converted for unleaded fuel, and the car benefits from electronic ignition and an electric fuel pump, making it far more usable in modern conditions. The suspension, braking system and exhaust have all received attention, and the car drives with the smooth, confident manner for which Alvis is so well regarded.

Most recently, in 2025, further maintenance was carried out including a new rocker cover gasket, exhaust manifold, cylinder head gasket and associated works, with invoices totalling £403, ensuring the car remains in excellent mechanical health.

Inside, the cabin is a wonderful step back in time. The original leather upholstery and polished wood veneers create an atmosphere of restrained luxury that modern cars simply cannot replicate. New carpets and headlining complement the interior while retaining its authentic 1950s character, making the driving experience both comfortable and evocative.

Accompanying the car is a substantial history file containing MOT records dating back to 1975, the original handbook, a wealth of invoices, photographs and correspondence from previous custodians. Together, these documents provide a reassuring insight into the car’s long-term stewardship and careful preservation.

Today, this Alvis TA21 stands as one of the most capable and usable British sports saloons of the early 1950s. Equally at home on a continental touring holiday, arriving at the Goodwood Revival or simply enjoyed on a quiet country road, it offers refinement, performance and heritage in equal measure. For the discerning collector seeking a true post-war classic with elegance, provenance and character, this beautifully presented TA21 represents a rare and highly appealing opportunity.
