Authentic and well-documented example of the 350cc longstroke Sunbeam
The Sunbeam Model 1 represents the Coventry marque’s well-earned reputation for precision engineering and understated quality during the inter-war period. Powered by the highly regarded long-stroke 350cc single-cylinder engine, the Model 1 was designed to deliver smooth, flexible performance and exceptional mechanical refinement, qualities for which Sunbeam motorcycles were widely admired.
By the mid-1920s Sunbeam had established itself as one of Britain’s most technically exacting manufacturers, with a strong emphasis on durability, quiet running, and meticulous build standards. The Model 1 sat within the firm’s core 350cc range and was aimed at riders seeking dependable touring ability combined with restrained sporting capability, all executed to Sunbeam’s famously high level of finish.
Long-stroke Sunbeam singles of this era are particularly well regarded for their torque-rich character and relaxed road manners, making them highly usable machines by vintage standards. Today, correct examples are increasingly scarce, and the Model 1 remains a desirable choice for collectors who appreciate engineering integrity, mechanical longevity, and the subtle elegance that defined Sunbeam motorcycles of the 1920s.
This Sunbeam Model 1 is presented in notably original configuration and displays the appealing patina associated with an older restoration. The machine retains the restrained specification and detail expected of Sunbeam’s highly regarded 350cc singles, reflecting the marque’s emphasis on precision engineering and longevity rather than overt sporting affectation.
The motorcycle has formed part of a museum collection since 2005 and has been carefully preserved in that setting. As a result, it presents with an honest, settled appearance rather than a recently refurbished finish, a quality increasingly sought after by collectors who value authenticity and period correctness. Having been in long-term static display, it will require recommissioning prior to use.
Accompanying the machine is a good selection of supporting paperwork, including copies of the original owner’s handbook, and it is supplied with a current V5C logbook, further enhancing its historical interest and usability. The overall presentation and specification make it an excellent candidate for sympathetic ownership, display, or participation in vintage rallies, where originality, reliability, and understated character are prized.
A well-preserved example of Sunbeam’s long-stroke 350cc design, this Model 1 offers an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire a machine that remains close in spirit and appearance to how it would have been experienced in period.
