Description
The Lancia Appia is a touring car launched in 1953 by the Italian automaker Lancia to replace the Ardea. Its production continued for ten years. The Appia was the last in a long line of Lancia volume-production cars dating back to the Lancia Lambda (launched in 1922), which used front suspension with sliding pillars. The three produced series were fitted with a Lancia V4 engine of 1, 089 cm³.
Third series:
In March 1959, the third series of the Appia was shown at the Geneva Motor Show with a new front end. The traditional Lancia shell-shaped grille was finally abandoned in favour of a horizontal grille inspired by the Lancia Flaminia, the marque’s flagship model. Engine power was increased again to 48 bhp, as was the top speed, which reached 132 km/ h. The braking system was improved with the addition of front drum brakes and a Duplex hydraulic circuit on the 1960 model. The model designations differed from the previous two series: 808. 807 for the left-hand drive (LHD) version and 808. 808 for the right-hand drive (RHD) version. With this third generation, the Appia reached full maturity, and 55, 577 saloons were produced, the vast majority in left-hand drive.
