Description

This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at Supercar Fest 2026 on Saturday the 16th of May, Sywell Aerodrome, Sywell, Northampton, NN6 0BN. Chevrolet may have been caught off guard by Ford's all-new Mustang in 1964, but by 1967 it had its own highly successful pony car in the Camaro. Inspired by the Super Nova show car displayed at the 1964 New York Auto Show, the Camaro featured the clean flowing lines and rounded contours that characterised Chevrolet designs of the mid-60s. The Camaro was in fact one of the purest designs ever issued by Chevrolet, embodying everything designer Bill Mitchell believed should constitute a proper sporting automobile; a clean attractive shape uncluttered by details, a high-performance drivetrain, bucket seats with a floor-mounted shifter and seating for four. That Chevrolet would offer a Super Sport package for the Camaro was a foregone conclusion, as was the availability of big-block power. When the SS396 debuted in late 1966, its performance was hampered by the mono-leaf rear springs carried over from the Chevrolet Nova, but that was solved in 1968 with the introduction of multi-leaf rear springs and staggered shocks that transferred all the Camaro's power to the ground. The RS was an appearance package with special grille treatment that included hidden and different headlamps from the standard Camaros, special RS badging and special chrome and blackout trim all adding some extra style to go along with the extra power of the SS.
This, second-year 1968 Camaro SS, is finished in classic Tuxedo Black over a matching black vinyl interior and presents with the purposeful stance and visual presence that has defined the Camaro since its introduction.
Originally built in California, this example was imported to the UK in 2019 and subsequently treated to a comprehensive restoration and mechanical overhaul under previous ownership. The work is understood to have been carried out to a high standard, with a focus on usability and presentation.
Power is provided by a 5. 7-litre V8 engine, paired with a desirable manual gearbox, offering the level of driver engagement and control sought-after by enthusiasts. Together, they deliver the effortless performance and unmistakable character expected of a period American muscle car.
Since joining our vendor’s significant private collection, the car has seen only minimal use but has benefited from being stored professionally in a controlled environment.
Well-sorted examples such as this strike an appealing balance between condition and usability. Equally at home as an entry point into classic American ownership or as a complementary addition to an established collection, this Chevrolet Camaro SS represents a compelling opportunity to acquire a highly recognisable and enjoyable piece of motoring Americana.
