1935 MG PB Midget - Marshall 75 Supercharger | Extensive Award Winning Competition History

Few pre-war British sports cars capture the spirit of 1930s motoring quite like the MG PB Midget.

Produced for just a short period between 1935 and 1936, the PB represented the final and most developed version of MG’s highly successful P-Type series. Powered by the enlarged 939cc overhead-camshaft engine and clothed in the distinctive narrow-bodied sporting coachwork that has become synonymous with the marque, the PB remains one of the most sought-after pre-war MG models today.

This particular example is one of just 526 PB models produced and presents as a well-preserved car with wonderful period character. Some 319 survivors are recorded on the MGCC Triple-M Register.

Finished in an attractive two-tone combination of cream and brown, reminiscent of the legendary MG Works “Cream Cracker” team cars, the MG retains its original interior, complete with Jaeger instrumentation, original fittings and many charming period details throughout. The cockpit remains pleasingly unspoilt and retains the authentic feel that enthusiasts increasingly seek.

Perhaps the most notable feature is the period Marshall 75 supercharger installation, fitted during the early 1990s. Combined with the enlarged 939cc engine and larger SU carburettor, it provides additional performance while remaining entirely in keeping with the sporting character of the model. Importantly, the engine has also been upgraded with a Phoenix crankshaft and connecting rods, highly regarded improvements amongst Triple-M enthusiasts for both strength and reliability. The current owner reports that the car starts readily, revs freely and pulls strongly, accompanied by the distinctive soundtrack that only a supercharged pre-war MG can provide.

Mechanically, the car appears remarkably original, while the engine bay presents in clean and tidy order. The starter motor was professionally rewound in 2021.

The history file is particularly impressive, containing invoices and documentation dating back to 1960, MOT certificates from 1969 onwards and a substantial collection of bills, correspondence, photographs and event records accumulated throughout the car’s life. Included amongst the paperwork are period invoices from 1961, offering a fascinating glimpse into the car’s early maintenance history. First supplied by C H Mitchell of Huddersfield, the MG has averaged approximately one owner per decade and enjoys a wonderfully documented history that extends well beyond simple maintenance records.

Further enhancing its sporting credentials, the car holds a current VSCC Buff Form and boasts an extensive competition history. The file contains photographs and records of participation in numerous VSCC events, MGCC Trials, hill climbs and race meetings over several decades. Amongst the highlights are photographs of the car competing in the Exeter Trial during 1985, participation in the Land’s End Trial, appearances at Silverstone and involvement in various Prescott, Oulton Park and Shelsley Walsh events.

One particularly evocative photograph even captures the MG virtually airborne whilst competing on a trial, perfectly illustrating the enthusiastic manner in which it has been enjoyed throughout its life.

As a light-hearted tribute to MG’s famous pre-war Works “Cream Cracker” team cars, this PB also formed part of the enthusiast-run “Half Crackers” team, adding another charming chapter to its already colourful competition history. As a further reminder of its active sporting life, scrutineers’ passes from previous events remain attached to the near-side door.

Importantly, this is not an over-restored example. The paintwork, dashboard and general presentation show signs of age and use entirely consistent with a well-maintained and regularly enjoyed pre-war sports car. For many enthusiasts, this originality and patina only enhance the car’s appeal.

MG PBs are becoming increasingly difficult to find, particularly examples that retain such strong period character, extensive documented history and genuine competition provenance. The combination of a Marshall 75 supercharger, Phoenix crankshaft and rods, current VSCC Buff Form, substantial history file and decades of active enthusiast ownership makes this a particularly appealing example of one of MG’s most charismatic pre-war sports cars.

Offering all the charm, involvement and character that enthusiasts seek from a 1930s MG, this PB appears ready to be enjoyed exactly as its makers intended. Ideal for hill climbs, trials, sprints or spirited road use, it represents a rare opportunity to acquire a well-documented example of one of the most desirable and engaging of all pre-war MG Midgets.
