Description

The Alvis TA14 was announced in November 1946 as a well-engineered luxury grand tourer; Alvis’ return to civilian production. While the majority were fitted with Mulliner four-door sports saloon bodies, the Drophead Coupé versions are considerably rarer and more desirable. This example is powered by an 1892cc inline four-cylinder overhead-valve engine, an evolution of the pre-war 12/ 70 unit, producing smooth and reliable performance. Paired with a four-speed manual gearbox, rigid rear axle and independent front suspension, the TA14 offers the perfect balance of comfort and character an ideal car for long-distance touring.

Registered KWJ621, this charming and rare Alvis TA14 DHC came into the hands of a Derbyshire based gentleman in around 2018 who had tremendous experience in classic car restorations having previously rebuilt a Jaguar E-type and an Alvis TD saloon. As he took it into his garage it was in need of a comprehensive restoration, the next few years were spent going through the vehicle completely.

A classic car specialist who had sold both of the Derbyshire based restorers rebuilt cars, took the vehicle in and carried out an inspection. From the paperwork we understand the Alvis had been subject to a full repaint and had received new tyres, a new soft top, new seats, new carpets, and new boot lining. The chassis was in impressive condition and following a piece of mechanical work where the rocker cover was removed, the tappets were adjusted, the timing was checked, the oil drained, gauze filter cleaned, and fresh oil added, the Alvis started and was taken on a pleasurable road test.

The Alvis spent a number of years in storage before being sold to a customer of ours in Cumbria in 2024. In preparation for its new owner, the radiator was refurbished and refitted along with a new radiator badge, the carburettor was removed, serviced, refit and set up, the wiring behind the dashboard was inspected and repaired as required ensuring all the panel lights and light units worked correctly, and the front wheel bearings were serviced along with the braking system. The Alvis has now returned to us in part exchange against an MGC, our customer now having a desire for 1960’s classic motoring.

Currently, the Alvis presents as a superb, usable example with only 5 former keepers. While KWJ 621 is not a concours winner, it it’s a very rare example that would be suitable for local events and grand touring.
