Few post-war British motor cars combine quality, character and usability quite like the Riley RMA.
Introduced shortly after the Second World War, the new RM Series represented a significant step forward for Riley. Combining elegant styling with the company’s well-proven 1½ litre engine, the RMA quickly established a reputation as one of the finest sporting saloons of its era, offering performance, refinement and handling that few contemporaries could match.
This particular example is a car we know well, having previously sold it to its current owner. Since then, it has benefitted from extensive further expenditure, careful maintenance and a programme of thoughtful improvements carried out by an enthusiastic and knowledgeable custodian.
Having now returned to The Garage, we genuinely feel this is one of the best-presented Riley RMAs we have encountered in recent years.
Finished in attractive Brooklands Green with ivory leather upholstery, the car presents beautifully throughout. The quality of the earlier restoration remains evident, while the recent ownership has focused on refining and improving the car mechanically, electrically and cosmetically to create an exceptionally usable and well-sorted example.
The accompanying history file is particularly impressive. Recent work includes improvements to the cooling system, braking system, suspension, carburation, electrical charging system, lighting and instrumentation. Numerous components have been renewed through the Riley RM Club, while sensible upgrades such as LED lighting, improved indicators, electric cooling fan and modern filtration have been carefully incorporated without compromising the character of the car.
Equally impressive is the level of documentation supplied. Ownership records extend back many decades and are supported by maintenance invoices, technical literature, workshop manuals, period press references, original instruction books and a comprehensive record of the work undertaken.
On the road, the Riley remains everything that made the RM Series so highly regarded. Comfortable, refined and surprisingly capable in modern traffic, it offers a wonderfully engaging driving experience while retaining all the charm and character of a late 1940s British sporting saloon.
The RM Series continues to enjoy excellent club support through both the Riley RM Club and the Riley Motor Club, with strong parts availability and an enthusiastic ownership community. As a result, these handsome and practical sporting saloons remain among the most enjoyable and usable post-war classics available today.
