Never known for missing a promotional opportunity Ford would produce 10352 Escort Mk1 Mexico’s (making it the most successful Escort from the AVO stable in sales terms) from 1970 following a ‘works’ victory in the London to Mexico Rally. Built exclusively at their AVO (Advanced Vehicle Operations) facility in Aveley, South Essex with Type 49 competition strengthened shells which had been first campaigned in 1968 in the Twin Cam model. The Type 49 shell benefitted from strengthened suspension strut tops, various reinforcement plates around the chassis and engine bay with radius arms to reduce rear axle tramp. In line with Ford’s desire to offer an RS for everyday use, the Mexico enjoyed an 85bhp Kent crossflow motor of 1601cc driven through the robust 2000E gearbox. Included as standard was the popular six dial instrument panel and disc brakes to assist in bringing all that performance to a halt. Ford pushed a busy advertising campaign boasting ‘The road version of the rally winner’ that could be yours for just £1150 … buyers that took the lead in the early 70’s were joined by thousands more over the following decades. Country Classic Cars are pleased to be able to offer this Mk1 Escort Mexico on behalf of the current short-term owner who actually won this car in a prize draw last year. Whilst we do not claim to be Ford specialists let alone authorities on the workings of AVO vehicles, we have checked the numbers on both chassis plate and AVO plate (both on front panel) and can confirm they do concur as Escort Mexico. Like most classics of this vintage extensive work has been carried out on this vehicle over the years and the images show it does carry the modifications we would expect to see as carried out at the Aveley Works. Registered 1st January 1973 with MOT history back to 2006 @ 43470 miles the mileometer now carries 49048 miles and is finished in the correct Le Mans Green.

Visually this Mexico does present well, even panel gaps just the odd tiny stone chip noticed plus good chrome and a nicely refurbished set of RS rims carrying Federal SS595 rubber. We did note a small dent and paint chip on the inside of the driver’s door at quarter light height caused by something getting caught on closure. Also, the A pillar, just below the check strap on both sides moisture has allowed slight corrosion to set in, a known water trap area this will require removal with small plates to remedy the issue. The current owner has taken these small issues into account when deciding on value with ourselves, whilst ensuring it is ‘priced attractively’ for any future custodians. Interior trim is a delight with later bucket type seating (but finished in keeping with the period) with fresh carpets and the original six-gauge dash combine to offer sporting comfort with a touch of modern convenience in the form of discreetly located audio. The driving experience is what this Mexico is all about and it doesn’t disappoint, starts ‘on the button’ this motor is eager from the off. For those seeking the fully sorted performance package this example deserves your attention with a host of upgrades whilst retaining the DNA of the sporting classic Ford suggested it would be 50 years ago.
