Description
1975 Ford Escort 1600 Mk1 4-door rare crossover-era example
-1600 Kent
-Manual
-Solid underbody
A genuine 1975-registered Escort 1600 that still carries the classic Mk1 lines. This is a particularly interesting car from the transitional period when Ford was moving from Mk1 to Mk2.
The Mk2 (“Project Brenda”) retained the Mk1 floorpan and much of its structure. Ford introduced the revised underbody as a running change during the last six months of Mk1 production (roughly mid-to-late 1974), so some late Mk1s already sit on what became the Mk2 platform.
A 1975 car can therefore be a very late Mk1, an early Mk2, or a blend of both.
Cars from this year that still look Mk1 from the side and rear are often early Mk2s.
The slam-panel plate is marked “BRENDA”. This is the internal project name for the Mk2, not a listed paint colour. On a car that presents as a Mk1, this most commonly indicates either a late-1974 Mk1 built on the new underbody, or an early Mk2 (sometimes an estate or van) that still looks Mk1-ish. The plate may also have been swapped at some point. A genuine factory prototype that reached private hands is possible but rare; Ford did not normally stamp “BRENDA” on customer cars.
A proper 1600 4-door from the crossover years, with real historical interest for anyone who appreciates the details of Escort development.
