I have for extremely reluctant sale one of my prized Citroen XM, which I am hoping to pass on to a new loving owner as I need to downsize my fleet mainly due to lack of space. The car has just passed an MOT with two minor advisories, being very small leaks from the front exhaust (possibly joint as front silencer recently replaced that I will attend) and the nearside front suspension sphere (now re-tightened).
In my humble opinion the late series one 2. 0 sei is easily the most attractive XM ever produced, with the original and more distinctive front and rear bodywork styling including a proper spoiler and nice angular dashboard, plus colour-coded exterior trim, Sport alloy wheels and full leather and wood inside. The petrol turbo engine and automatic gearbox are extremely quiet and smooth with plenty of power and acceleration (150bhp) and the added refinement of cruise control, plus quite reasonable fuel economy for the size and age of the car (between 28-35mpg depending on driving style and conditions).
For those of you that know your XM, the later models from 1994 were face-lifted to match the new Xantia replacing the BX, with the most obvious changes being to the dashboard and wheel designs that have much less character. This car is a very late ‘run-off’ for series one and has every additional trim and feature option apart from heated seats. Another benefit of series one cars is that they are generally less prone to corrosion underneath, including subframes, sills and front strut tops. The later series one cars also have improved electrics and hydractive-two suspension.
This car has been in my ownership since 2008 with a mileage of around 85, 000 and my wife and I have since added a further 30, 000 of virtually trouble free highly enjoyable miles, including trips all around the UK and to Brittany, France. When I purchased the car I immediately changed all the suspension spheres and hydraulic oil and the accumulator sphere was replaced at 93K. The car has its original manual and fully stamped service booklet and was attended by main dealers until my acquisition and I have methodically kept all paperwork that was passed on and since.
There is a good deal of other history with the car including a cambelt change at 68K and during my tenure there have been regular engine and gearbox oil changes. I fitted new spark plugs and an air filter at 102K and more recently a front exhaust silencer and Michelin Energy Saver tyres and replacement brake shoes to the front wheels.
The very attractive Mandarin red paint and bodywork are in nice condition with only very minor scratches and tiny dents and no visible rust and there has been no welding on the sills, with all jacking points completely undamaged. Both the engine and gearbox are in really good working order with no issues to my knowledge and the suspension is very nicely soft as it should be, including a complete absence of oil and water leaks. The full-leather interior and carpets are unmarked (including no wear on driver’s seat bolster) and there are rubber mats fitted. As you will note, the car comes fitted with a non-leather single spoke steering wheel and I shall include the original two-spoke leather wheel. There are also no digital display, window or sunroof issues and the central locking and alarm also work as they should, although I have never bothered to re-charge the aircon!
The series one XM is now an accepted modern classic and a collectable car and all models are also becoming very scarce, especially examples in good order. Later series one cars were sold in tiny numbers and you are quite unlikely to find another for sale now or in the near future of this type and condition, still with a relatively low mileage and plenty of history. The few surviving well-cared for cars are generally now being kept and stored rather than sold on.
I am a serious XM enthusiast currently with a collection of seven cars and an active member of the Citroen Car Club and XM Internet Forums. As an indication of my interest and the care lavished on my cars, I have been fortunate to twice win 'Best XM' at CCC events and I am also privileged to serve as an XM Representative on the CX/ XM/ Xantia Section.
Please do let me know if you have any queries or wish to view the car that is in Aylsham, North Norfolk, some twelve miles north of Norwich and very easily accessible by public transport. There is currently tax until the end of this month and nearly a full year MOT on the car and further tax can be obtained at cost if desired. The car is also advertised elsewhere and has already generated much interest!
