In the early 1990’s, Ford and GM were getting into a heated battle over the performance pickup truck segment. In 1993, Ford introduced the first Lightning. Their goal was to build a Mustang Cobra with a truck bed. The concept was based on the single cab XLT ½-ton pickup truck. Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) engineers wedged a special 5. 8L engine into the truck. This was a special production motor that was improved with a pair of GT-40 aluminum cylinder heads (from the competition department) and aggressive cam to take advantage of the increased valve and port sizes. High-silicon aluminum pistons with lighter rings were fitted to a Windsor small block. A specially tuned aluminum intake manifold was used along with a larger throttle body. Air exited out of tubular headers and a dual exhaust system. Ultimately, the engine produced 240hp and 340lb ft. of torque.
This power was managed by an improved/ tuned electronic four-speed transmission, 4. 0” diameter aluminum driveshaft, and limited slip differential. Finally, an SVT-tuned suspension was added to the setup. To match the improved performance, SVT enhanced the looks with special aluminum wheels, front valence with fog lights, Lightning badged contoured sport seats, and tubular rear bumpers. In total, around 10, 000 limited edition Lightnings were built from 1993 to 1995. They came in red, white, and black. In 1993, Ford only built 1, 165 red units. Unfortunately, most of these unique pickups didn’t last the test of time and have nearly disappeared from the automotive landscape.
This Lightning was built on May 26th, 1993 and sold new by Bob Keim Ford of Columbus, Ohio.
All Lightnings came standard with the Preferred Equipment Package 509A. However, there were four other options available for order. This example came with all but the tow package:
Sliding rear window
Bright electric mirrors
Tubular rear bumper
Most of this truck’s life was pretty uneventful. It was lightly used and never abused. It changed hands a few times and each owner appeared to not add too many miles (original miles documented through the AutoCheck report). The current owner purchased the car last year, as this had been one of his favorites while in high school. He spent sometime searching for a good original example with low-miles. Upon purchasing this truck, he immediately had his local Ford dealer perform an oil service and anything else it needed. The service tech stated that this was the nicest Lightning he had ever seen. The vehicle was very straight with no signs of abuse or rot.
Shortly afterwards, while driving in bumper-to-bumper L. A. traffic, the owner tapped a Honda CRV. The damage was a light dent in the hood and front bumper. The owner used this opportunity to improve the paint to his standard. He employed the help of a top local Porsche/ Ferrari paint specialist and had the truck completely stripped to the bare metal. Any signs of corrosion were repaired and Glasurit paint was applied in the exact same factory shade. The results are absolutely stunning. In fact, this paint job is far nicer than anything that rolled of the Detroit plant.
As you can imagine, the exterior of the car is stunning and near flawless. The paint looks perfect. The glass is fresh and the rubber looks great. The original aluminum wheels have no curb rash and are wearing BF Goodrich tires with near full tread. All of the exterior lights function properly. The interior is equally as nice and indicative of a low mile/ gently-used pickup. The cloth seats show minimal signs of wear. This is a non-smoker vehicle with no strange odors. The dash is perfect with no cracks. The headliner and carpet have no stains. The door panels show just some minor wear on the top trim (see pic). All the gauges and interior lights operate properly. The A/ C has recently been serviced and blows cold. The original radio is included with the vehicle, but it has been upgraded with a Bluetooth system.
While the car was getting painted, the owner went through all the interior bits to find anything loose and eliminate any pesky rattles that are so common in older trucks. As a result, it drives amazing and is extremely tight. No annoying rattles. In fact, it feels almost new. It starts easily with no smoking. The throttle response is immediate with great power. The transmission shifts smoothly with no jerking into gears. The brakes have good bite with decent pedal feel. The handling is fairly impressive for a 24-year old truck. The upgraded suspension gives the truck a better stance and good handling. The lowered springs in the rear may bottom out on large dips or heavy loads. If you plan on doing any significant hauling, I recommend installing the stock rear springs, which are included.
This vehicle passes California’s strict smog test and is registered until October of 2017.
This Lightning comes with an extra set of keys, original window sticker, original owner’s manuals, original radio, original factory sales brochure, and the original suspension parts.
