Ferrari 250 GT SWB California replica

This is based on a modern BMW Z3 so has 1960’s supercar looks and performance with none of the downsides. It’s cheap to insure (around £180 fully comp), returns up to 32 MPG and is cheap to service. At around £6-12, 000, 000 for an original car, most are in museums or secure storage.

We drove the car down to Lemans last year and it stopped traffic (like it does everywhere in the UK) and had trouble getting out of the fuel stations on route due to photographers blocking its exit. At Goodwood revival last year we were picked out of the queue of waiting cars and escorted to the field next to the entrance driving past hundreds of genuine classics. No one asks if it’s a replica, they just assume it’s real unless they are a rare Ferrari anorak. It has been featured in many magazine articles,

The car is based on a modern, legendary record of reliability, well equipped Z3 with a galvanised chassis and now with thick strong fibreglass panels should last forever, and no renovation work needed every few years like classic cars. Only a handful of these are in existence and will appreciate in value. Ownership should be almost free.

This particular model was the factory demonstrator for Nubodi Automotive (- details above) so was built to an extra high standard and is faultless condition. There was no budget, just the best of every part available. These rarely come up for sale and this has to be the most desirable of its kind in the world.

Donor car

The best car was sourced, this is a 3. 0, 6 cylinder M-Sport, 2002 (the last year of production) Facelift with only 124972 mls (averages approx. 8000 mls a year). This is barely run in for one of these engines. Have a look what these are fetching on ebay.

It has around 250 BHP which is more power than the original! As the Z3 was based around the E36 3 series the parts are plentiful and cheap.

Specification

Electric windows (both one touch), ABS, traction control, remote central locking alarm, 3 sets of original keys (2 remotes and program keys), leather wallet with lots of handbooks including the owners handbook, MOT till 4th April 2018 (no advises), electric power roof (5 seconds and you are in the sunshine) which does not leak . The roof is in perfect condition with a clear rear window

Engine

The car starts first time every time, does not smoke and is quiet, it has just had a full service, including gearbox oil & filter change, brakes are very good, tyres and exhaust all new

Wheels and tyres

These are chrome wire wheels with stainless steel spokes (as that bit normally corrodes). They are Jaguar stud pattern and are 6 x 16 in beautiful condition. They have 3 eared spinners and chrome nut caps. The four tyres are Toyo Proxes CF2’s which grip well and are as new.

Exterior

It was painted two years ago in 2 pack Ferrari Rosso Corsa and still looks like it’s just been painted.

Interior

Rover 75 ‘period’ very comfy seats, alloy gear knob, chrome ashtray (which hides the hazard switch and electric window switches), custom made centre console and door panels with elasticated door pockets, RED stitched handbrake gaiter, gear lever gaiter and clocks cover, internal boot hinges conversion, dummy winders and levers, JVC CD player/ USB/ MP3 hidden in glove box

Other

Private plate, black & silver pressed aluminium number plates, P700 (tri-bar) headlights, wood rimmed steering wheel (top quality), wider headlight rims (like original), genuine Ferrari side repeaters, wing shield badges, boot script and bonnet badge, USA mirrors, leather bonnet straps, chrome washer jets, dashboard mounted rear view mirror, lucas ‘period’ spotlights, chrome windscreen wipers, extra dummy gauges, Monza fuel cap, replica rear lights, chrome number plate rear lights, etc, etc

Faults

A couple of annoying ones, there is a vibration from the front wheels between 40 and 50mph only due to Jaguar wheels being 0 . 6mm different on stud pattern, and the gearbox changes down quite hard but has always been like this for two years. Both are liveable and do not detract from the overall experience. Just nit picking really.

It has a full stainless steel custom made exhaust system by Longlife with a lifetime warranty. This makes it sound like the original car and releases more horses. See here, turn your speakers up!

The DNA California replicas (not available any more) of the LWB model fetch double what this is up for, are still a fibreglass kit on a Z3, and most people prefer the shape of this one.

Classic replicas are the fastest appreciating asset at the moment because ordinary folk cannot afford the outrageous price and restoration costs of Classic cars. I read an article recently in one of the classic car magazines that Classic replicas have increased in value by 395% since 2015!!

The vehicle has just had a number plate change as I wanted to retain the original (K9 SVG), a 6 digit private plate has been added (R59 AEV).

It comes with a FULL tank of fuel also.

What could be better, an appreciating classic car in it’s own right with 1960’ styling that is bulletproof reliable and has all the feature of a modern BMW, can be fixed and diagnosed in any garage, can be used all year round, a superb tourer without the multi million pound price-tag?
