Description
We are delighted to present this extremely rare 1993 Mercedes 500E. Having been developed in close partnership with Porsche, the 500E remains a significant piece of Mercedes automotive history.
The 500E was developed and produced between 1990 and 1995 jointly between Mercedes Benz & Porsche to conquer BMW's hand-built E34 M5. The build quality of the 500E was the pinnacle of Mercedes Benz craftsmanship. Whilst other models of the W124 were built in 3 days, the E500 took 18 days each to build, with the shell being built & painted first, then taken to Porsche for fitting of mechanicals. They were in fact assembled on the Porsche 959 supercar production line in Zuffenhausen, then shipped back to Mercedes and then back to Porsche throughout the build. Each was car was assembled by hand, so although visually the 500E resembles its lesser siblings, it has many subtle differences making this vehicle rather special indeed.
With a powerful 322hp 5. 0 litre V8, the 500E delivered impressive performance figures including 0-60mph in 6 seconds and a limited top speed of 155mph (178mph derestricted).
A few clues gave away that this was not an ordinary W124. All 500E’s came fully equipped and included four Recaro seats (heated in front), a reworked body kit, 1. 5 inches wider track, 0. 9 inch lower profile, flared front and rear wheel arches, side skirts, a front air-dam, shorter springs that lowered the car by an inch, Jetronics ignition system, bigger brakes and brake callipers, and bespoke 500E headlights.
Production numbers ran as follows; 1990 = 46 units; 1991 = 2, 566 units; 1992 = 4, 416 units, 1993 = 1, 596 units; 1994 = 1, 735 units, and production ended early in 1995 with the delivery of 120 units. The total production run for the W124 500E was therefore 10, 479 cars. As far as the UK is concerned, only 42 cars are currently registered, with 21 licensed on the road, and 21 registered as SORN.
The pristine 500E we are offering to the market has just 139, 700 KM’s on the clock (86, 800 miles). It was originally delivered to a customer in Germany in March of 1993, was first registered in the UK on the 13th September 1999, and was purchased by the current owner on the 5th December 2000. Since then, the car has been meticulously maintained and over the past ten years has been maintained in dry storage, where the car currently resides.
She has recently undergone a major service with all fluids drained, flushed and replaced, and has MOT in place (expires 20th July 2018). The car is simply wonderful to drive and will no doubt be thoroughly enjoyed by the next owner.
The registration (MER 500E) currently carried by this 500E is offered with the sale of the car.
The car is currently stored as part of a private car collection in Henley-on-Thames, so notice will be required for us to gain access for viewing (24 hours minimum).
