The Riley 4/ 72 was produced from 1961 until 1969. BMC’s model hierarchy was complicated in the 60’s but the Riley versions, which combined luxury with increased power were usually the most expensive, in the case of the Farina, 20% dearer than an A60. Perhaps as a consequence they sold in smaller numbers, of the 550, 000 ADO38 models produced, just 14, 000 were 4/ 72’s.
This car is a Riley 4/ 72 automatic saloon in its original two-tone colour scheme. It has been in the same ownership for the last 47 years and the mileage is correct at just 78, 000. The last owner bought it from Glanfield Lawrence, London N12 in 1971 when it was four years old. It was little used from the 1990’s and then dry stored until recently when the last owners son treated it to a comprehensive and sympathetic re-commissioning (over £2000 in parts alone). Since the car came to us we have carried out a little further detailing and tweaking. As you can see from the photos, it is in superb order – the body is rust free and the underside is clean and remarkably original. The paintwork is very good with just the odd imperfection on the lower section. The interior is particularly good with just the lightest signs of wear and the under bonnet presents superbly with an array of new and refinished components. Most importantly it drives well, the engine runs sweetly with strong oil pressure and the automatic gearbox changes smoothly.
We are huge fans of the “Farina” models and we have owned some of the very best but this is perhaps unique in terms of provenance. It is also the rarest version of a range of cars that are tough, inexpensive to maintain and somewhat under-valued. They are also great to drive and the automatic option on this car is well suited to the Riley version with twin SU’s.
This car is ready to use with full MOT. Comes with various old MOT’s, original hand book, workshop manual and order form from the supplying dealer in 1971. It is fitted with an alarm and immobilizer and brake servo and comes with some spares.
