Trinity Car Solutions presents for sale a simply stunning Ford Fiesta XR2i, finished in the ever popular Ford Radiant Red, an exemplary example in show winning condition.

The introduction of the Mk3 Fiesta in April 1989 was a welcome one, updating the look of the car, bringing it bang up to date in terms of styling, performance and offering excellent value for money. Ford was manufacturer was massive motorsport heritage and always produced a hot model that showed just what they could produce, often with that model leading into competitive motorsport. Legend has it that Ford had a large stock pile of old XR2 engines left over, so decided to hastily put them into the new Mk3 body shell, giving us the Fiesta 1. 6S. This was far from being the hot hatch people were screaming out for. They made the public wait a further five months until they released the proper hot Fiesta, the XR2i.

The XR badge has been attached to the Fiesta twice before in the models that the Mk3 preceded, but this time it got a little more than it had been allowed before. The car was based on an excellent chassis that can still put many cars to shame today. The suspension was refined over the standard models and slightly lowered and stiffened to bring the cars centre of gravity closer to the ground to combat such problems as understeer and body roll. The car also received anti roll bars to aid this problem too. The car was treated to deeper colour coded bumpers incorporating added driving lights and front fog lights, deep side skirts and arch extensions along with the iconic blue stripe, telling the people in the know, just what it was. Colours available were Diamond White, Radiant Red, Mercury Grey and Black.

Standard items that could be found on the XR2i were central locking, electric windows, sports seats, and a Ford 2005 stereo system. Compared with today’s standards this is somewhat lacking in creature comforts, but was adequate at the time. Optional too were 13″ alloy wheels and a heated front screen to help in winter months.

Eventually, all good things must come to an end and in 1993, the XR2i was cut from production and the last remaining few were sold. Ford had created a car iconic to its time that to this day is fused with many things including the image of the 90’s boy racer, clutching his latest rave tape and copy of Max Power cruising round the streets of a town near you. It had proved itself on the track with its own championship and had provided years of entertainment to enthusiasts across the land. It spelled the end of the XR badge with the Fiesta due to astronomical insurance costs with crime and joy riding at an all time high.

Over two generations, the Ford Fiesta XR2 captured a healthy slice of the fast hatch market between full blown GTIs and ‘warm’ models such as the Citroën AX GT. For the follow up XR2i, it gained fuel injection as well as a price tag of almost £10, 000, about £1200 more than the XR2. Suddenly the fast Fiesta was positioned against the Renault 5 GT Turbo, Peugeot 205 GTI and Volkswagen Golf GTI.

Under its bonnet was a new version of the CVH 1. 6 litre engine, a development of the unit found in the Escort XR3i, with a power output of 110bhp giving it a 14bhp advantage over the outgoing XR2. Those figures placed the hot Ford midway up the performance ladder of the day, and the XR2i has certainly got what it takes to stay with the Peugeot 205 1. 6 in any contest and comfortably shadows the French car on the road, the XR2i is more energetic low down, the 205 crisper high up.

The two cars were similar in terms of ride, both being firm around town but acceptably smooth across country and on the motorway. With the motoring press of the day raving equally about the 205’s “blindingly fast” gearchange compared with the XR2i’s “smooth and exacting action". The XR2i has enough grip, though too much power is wasted in wheelspin at times, but with its great chassis its overall balance is safe.

Our stunning example is a well known car in the Fast Ford and XR owners motoring circles, and has been lovingly cared for by his enthusiast owner. This car is exceptionally well presented, everything as new, and is testament to its 44k miles from new. The interior is excellent and the paintwork is in extremely good order, as clean underneath as it is on top, with an engine bay you could eat your dinner off. This is as good as one of these delightful little hot hatches gets, a sure fire winner weather its as an investment, or on the show field, he simply has to be seen to be appreciated

Any inspection is welcome as this car has undergone a complete preparation for sale schedule by the team at Trinity Car Solutions. An extremely rare find; a Ford Fiesta XR2i that hasn't been altered in any way, in absolutely exacting condition, better than new and a car to win shows with.
